Retooled Navidad virus on the loose

Symantec's AntiVirus Research Center has discovered a new, more potent
variant to the "Navidad" virus.

Early this month, the email virus infected computers in at least 10
Fortune 500 companies, causing more annoyance than destruction, computer
experts said.

That original version had buggy code, disabling a relaunch feature that
was intended to bombard victims with repeated attacks. That bad code has
been fixed in a new version, making it potentially more damaging. In all
other respects, the two variations are identical.

Hello,

In our December Computer Capers, we have an activity posted that describes
what students can do at home or school to celebrate the International
Language Week:

Using a spreadsheet, you can record the following activity idea:

Can you say "Hello" in Spanish? How about "Good-Bye" in German? Celebrate
International Language Week, December 15-21, by finding out how to say some
common phrases in other languages. You can record the information you gather
in a word processor. If you are having a hard time finding information, try
calling a friend or family member who has learned how to speak the language,
look up the information at your local library, or do some searching on the
internet. Once you have gathered your information, compare how different
languages say the same phrases. Do you see any similarities? Keep your
information handy, maybe post it on your refrigerator or family bulletin
board and try to use your "new" words daily as you interact with your
friends and family.

We've included some Internet extenstions that you can do with this activity.
All computer capers are available by web page or can be downloaded in a one
page handout using Adobe Acrobat Reader.
http://www.buddyproject.org/parent/capers/dec00.asp

Enjoy International Language Week!

Read Any Good Books Lately? We Have - at the National Science Teachers
Association

ARLINGTON, VA, NOVEMBER 29, 2000 - Science teachers will be the first to
know about great new science books and other teaching materials on the
market with an innovative Internet-based resource being developed by the
National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). Considered to be the
"Amazon.com for science teachers," the Association's newest offering, NSTA
Recommends, provides reviews of the best science-based K-12 trade books,
teacher publications, software, and other media currently on the market.
The effort is another valuable and timesaving resource offered by NSTA for
the nation's 1.7 million teachers of science.

NSTA surveyed its members and found that a lack of time for planning and
seeking out quality resources to use in the classroom is one of the biggest
challenges facing science teachers. NSTA Recommends is a direct response to
this challenge.

"There are thousands upon thousands of publications and materials on the
market for teachers of science. Unfortunately, it's a tall task for the
lone educator, especially an elementary teacher who is responsible for
teaching many subjects, to sort the wheat from the chaff," said David
Beacom, publisher, NSTA Press. "This is why NSTA Recommends is so powerful.
It provides a 'stamp of approval' from a respected professional source that
helps teachers make good decisions about what to use in the classroom."

For years, NSTA has included reviews of popular science teaching resources
in its journals, but the effort never covered more than a handful of
resources at a time. NSTA Recommends significantly expands the number of
reviews and gives this valuable information a wider audience by making it
available to anyone who visits the NSTA Web site. NSTA expects to give
professional recommendations on hundreds of books and media resources in the
coming months, and expects to top more than a thousand by the beginning of
the next school year.

The backbone of NSTA Recommends is a professional Review Panel composed of
K-12 science educators from across the country. Members of the Panel are
sought for their expertise in a wide range of science subjects and teaching
levels. Leading this vast effort is Juliana Texley, a well-known science
educator whose career has included teaching, serving as editor of the
journal The Science Teacher, writing numerous books, and serving as
superintendent of the Anchor Bay Schools in New Baltimore, Mich.

The NSTA Recommends Review Panel evaluates each publication and resource for
subject matter, grade-level appropriateness, and completeness. Following
this intensive process, the reviews are then published on the NSTA
Recommends Web site, organized and searchable by grade level, subject area
(e.g., biology, chemistry, physics, earth science), key word, and author.
NSTA also encourages visitors to the NSTA Recommends site to post their own
opinions about the resources listed there, thus creating a network of shared
ideas that helps teachers make wise decisions about what they purchase.

The Review Panel is continually adding new reviews to the program. More
than 100 reviews are currently posted on the Web site, and NSTA expects that
number to jump five-fold in the coming months.

In August, NSTA made a bold move to put the complete versions of some of its
own popular science publications online. Called Read It!, the Web site
allows teachers to read the full text of these publications prior to
purchase. Thirteen of NSTA's publications are already online, including The
Creation Controversy & The Science Classroom, developed by NSTA in response
to the increasing attention being given to the teaching of evolution. A
dozen new titles will be added annually.

NSTA Recommends and Read It! are accessible on the NSTA Web site at
http://www.nsta.org/recommends and www.nsta.org/store.

Founded in 1944, the National Science Teachers Association is the world's
largest organization dedicated to promoting excellence and innovation in
science teaching and learning for all. The Association's current membership
of more than 53,000 includes science teachers, science supervisors,
administrators, scientists, business and industry representatives, and
others actively involved in science education.

"The Barringer Meteorite Crater (also known as "Meteor Crater") is a
gigantic hole in the middle of the arid sandstone of the Arizona desert.
A rim of smashed and jumbled boulders, some of them the
size of small houses, rises 150 feet above the level of the surrounding
plain. The crater itself is nearly a mile wide, and 570 feet deep.

When Europeans first discovered the crater, the plain around it was
covered with chunks of meteoritic iron - over 30 tons of it, scattered
over an area 8 to 10 miles in diameter."

Subject: [EdResource] Designing School Web Sites

Hello,

I've recently added a tutorial to our site called "Designing School Web
Sites." http://www.buddyproject.org/tool/design/ I've designed my school web
site, several web based activities, and now I'm redesigning an educational
technology project here in Indiana. These are the steps that I have used as
I have designed and published information for the Internet.

I divided this tutorial into 4 sections. The first section you may have
already addressed is called "Preparation." In this section, you will find
ideas for the following:

* Building a School Web Team
*Creating a School-Wide Publishing Policy
*Finding a Host for your Site
*Copyright and Citing Resources on your Site (Links to another tutorial)
*Gathering Offline and Online Resource Materials

The next section of this tutorial covers tips for "Developing Your
Resources":

*Brainstorm Content You Want to Develop (handout is available)
*Understanding what is Good Web Design (handout is available)
*Using a Rubric to Assess Other Sites (handout is available)
*Assessing Other School Sites
*Re-evaluate What Content You Want to Include in Your Site
*Creating a Storyboard of Ideas
*Tips for Creating and Naming Files and Folders

The third section of this tutorial is on "Designing Your Resources":

*Page Layout Tips
*Planning Your Navigational Links
*Adding Graphics to Your Site (links to another tutorial you can use)
*Establishing Credibility to Your Information
*Design to Drive Traffic to Your Site
*Adding Interaction to Your Site (Message Boards/forms/polls/etc.)
*Adding Interaction to Your Student Resources (games/quizzes/etc.)
*Evaluating the Content You've Created

The last section of this tutorial is on "Delivering Your Resources":

*Tips for Announcing Your Web Site to the Global educational community
*Discover Who is Viewing Your site

I hope this helps anyone who is beginning to create and design their school
web site!
