I was looking for K-8 library books, particularly fiction and picture
books, to use with children who have become discipline problems for one
reason or another--acting out in class, fighting, getting angry, gang
involvement, or personal problems like depression or cross-cultural
conflict. These books are primarily meant for bibliotherapy. (Our district
has a big project on for "prevention" services.) Here are the responses
(thank you so much!):

How about Bill Cosby's Little Bill series at a K-3 level?

Ahhh, those Berenstain Bears! How about those books??

Abbey's Wish and Because A Little bug Said Ka-Choo.
[I think these are Abby's Wish, by Liza St. John (Raintree/Steck-Vaughn)
and Because a Little Bug Went Ka-choo!, by Rosetta Stone (Random House).]

Graham Salisbury has some interesting stuff in "Jungle Dogs" [Delacorte
1998] and "Blue Skin of the Sea" [Laurel Leaf 1994].

Perhaps Crash by Jerry Spinelli would fit in there somewhere.

Are you familiar with the series of professional books called "The
Bookfinder"? They are published by the American Guidance Service and
designed specifically for bibliotherapy. I have 3 of them, and they are
very helpful, especially in finding books on a wide variety of guidance
topics. Your public library may have copies. That is where I first saw
them.
Also, we have a book titled Literature-Based Moral Education published by
Oryx Press that includes suggested activities as well as summaries of the
recommended titles. It does not give age or grade levels, though.
I also use Judy Freeman's books (Books Kids Will Sit Still For and More Books
Kids Will Sit Still For) to help me find books about honesty,
responsibility, etc.

[anger book]:
for your older kids 7th and 8th grade have them read Chris Crutcher's
Ironman. My counselor has done bibliotherapy with this one.

Nonfiction series:
Facts on File "Straight Talk About ..." (grades 7+, advanced)
Rosen Publishing Group "Need to Know" Library (800-237-9932) (grades 7+,
hi/lo)
Raintree/Steck-Vaughn "Preteen Pressures" (grades 5 - 8)
PowerKids Press: series on safety, gangs, dealing with personal problems,
communication, conflict (call Rosen)(primary grades)

A few books suggested in a post on LMNET this spring: Mean Soup, King of
the Playground, Bootsie Barker Bites, Temper Tantrum Book.

I just bought what looks like an excellent book: Teaching Conflict
Resolution Through Children's Literature. William J. Kreidler. Scholastic
Professional Books, 1994. Each chapter covers a separate topic, and lists
books with lesson plans. Some examples:

What's conflict: Udry, Let's Be Enemies. Clifton, Three wishes. Martin, The
Honey Hunters.
Conflict escalation: Jones, Matthew and Tilly. Wildsmith, The owl and the
woodpecker. Baker, The Pig War. Lionni, It's Mine!. Zolotow, The
quarreling book.
Solving conflict: dePaola, The knight and the dragon. Kellogg. Island of
the Skog. Surat, Angel child, dragon child. Bunting, Clancy's coat.
Solving problems: Lionni, Six crows. Blaine, The terrible thing that
happened at my house. Dr. Seuss, The butter battle.
Understanding other perspectives: Zolotow. The hating book. Asch, Here
comes the cat!
Conflict and feelings: Steig. Spinky sulks. Viorst. Alexander and the
terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Carle, The grouchy ladybug.
