As to where/how to shelve paperback; as to many problems in the library
depends upon which method is best for your students and yourself.
I do both:
If I have a paperback that is a Best book for YA, or other recommended
fiction, I catalog them, and place them on the regular fiction shelves.
If I have other titles by the same author that are alread cataloged, I
(sometimes catalog them, sometimes I just do a shelf life, spine, card and
pocket) and shelve them all together.
Otherwise, I shelve them in a special area, with just card and pocket.
I try to place a sticker on the spine and try to keep them on the shelf
arranged by gendre. But I do not try to keep them in alphabetical order.
Hope this helps.
