The Office of Higher Education Programs invites interested individuals to
apply to serve as peer reviewers (field readers) to evaluate Partnership and
State grant applicants for GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Programs) authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education
Act, as amended. The purpose of this program is to give more low-income
students the skills, inspiration, and preparation needed to pursue
postsecondary education. Through early college preparation and awareness
activities, eligible students are provided comprehensive mentoring,
counseling, outreach and support services, including information to students
and their parents about the benefits of postsecondary education and the
availability of Federal financial assistance to attend college. Through the
scholarship component, which is mandatory for State Grants and optional for
Partnership Grants, eligible students area provided scholarships for higher
education
Duties and Compensation of Peer Reviewers: Peer reviewers will evaluate
applications according to the applicable published selection criterion. Each
reviewer may be asked to serve for a period of approximately 6-12 days,
depending on the number of applications received. Each reviewer who is
selected will received compensation for certain travel expenses and an
honorarium.
Peer Reviewer Qualifications The Office of Higher Education Programs is
seeking experienced and knowledgeable professionals who are current with
issues surrounding the preparation of K-12 students and providing these
students with the skills, inspiration, and preparation needed to pursue
postsecondary education. These professionals should be familiar with matters
dealing with the administration and management of early intervention and
financial assistance programs that provide mentoring, counseling, outreach,
and other supportive services to low-income, disadvantaged students. In
addition, prospective readers should have experience with or knowledge of
working with partnerships.
Prospective reviewers may come from institutions of higher education, local
school districts, State and local educational agencies, community-based
organizations, etc.
Application process: Any individual interested in serving as a peer reviewer
should mail or fax his/her resume to the address listed below indicating the
program in which they are interested in serving as a reviewer.
Two page resumes that highlight the person's experience in educational
initiatives, partnerships, and early intervention programs may be sent via
