COGNITIVELY CHALLENGING CURRICULUM for Three- to Six- Year Olds
A model for providing content-rich, child-centered curriculum for
young children. Strategies for enriching children's play through use of
reflective questioning techniques, documenting learning experiences,
conducting on-going assessment, and engaging in reflection.
Dates: Term I: January 19 - February 12, 1999 (1 credit or 15 PDP's)
and/or
Term II: February 22 - March 19, 1999 (1 credit or 15
PDP's)
Term III: March 22 - April 16, 1999 (1 credit).
Topics: Term I will focus on subject -based curriculum. Topics for
projects will integrate science, social studies, literacy, mathematics, the
arts and health. Term II will focus on social-emotional issues as a basis
for curriculum planning. Topics for projects will be based on children's
concerns - such as fears, fairness, and being left out. Projects will
integrate the various subject areas. Term III will involve independent
project work.
In each term participants will explore how to plan curriculum with
children, develop and implement project activities, and document the
learning process. Also included will be strategies for stimulating
conversations, ways of helping children represent their ideas and assessing
children's learning. A key component will be curriculum evaluation.
Prerequisites: E-mail capability and availability 4 hours per week
online. (Determine your own hours and location). If taking course for
credit, plan an additional 8 hours per week for course preparation.
College Credit: 1 - 3 credits or Professional Development Points
(15 PDP's) per term.
Cost: $300 per undergraduate or graduate credit (plus $30
registration and materials fee);
$125 per term for 15 professional development points (plus
$15 materials fee).
