(1) EXPENSE-PAID UCEP WORKSHOP
Next summer, NASA is offering two 2-week workshops in the Urban Community
Enrichment Program (UCEP), for educators teaching grades 5-8. The program
consists of hands-on science, mathematics, and technology activities.
Teachers interact with aerospace specialists, engineers, scientists, and
technicians and discuss current space and aeronautical discoveries. The
deadline for applications is March 15, 1999. Information about this
expense-paid workshop, held at Oklahoma State University, is contained in
the UCEP brochure that is now available at the following WWW site:

http://spacelink.nasa.gov/Instructional.Materials/NASA.Educational.Products/
Urban.Community. Enrichment.Program.Brochure/

As a reminder, the NASA Educational Workshops (NEW) is a similar
opportunity for teachers of all grades, and is described at:
http://www.nsta.org/programs/new.htm
The NEW application deadline is February 20.

(2) NASA OPPORTUNITY FOR AMATEUR SCIENTISTS
http://www.startrails.com/
The Star Trails Society is an initiative by the NASA/Marshall Space
Sciences Lab to involve their science news readers in research. Each month
they plan to announce opportunities for amateur scientists (including
students and teachers) to contribute to research in astronomy,
astrobiology, and other natural sciences. Sign up at the WWW site above.

(3) ASK DR. SCIENCE
http://www.drscience.com/
For humorous answers to scientific questions ... ask Dr. Science. You too
can learn the secrets to the universe (or not) by signing up for the daily
e-mail, in which Dr. Science answers a perplexing question, such as "Since
there is a speed of light and a speed of sound, is there a speed of smell?"
There's even a searchable archive of past questions, so you can find out
the answer to the example question above.

(4) TELL ME ABOUT YOUR MICROGRAVITY DEMONSTRATORS
Using this newsletter and the WWW site, I would like to share educator
experiences in the use and construction of various microgravity
demonstrators, such as those described in the Microgravity Teachers Guide,
or the Reduced-Gravity Demonstrator, described at:
http://zeta.lerc.nasa.gov/mini/minit.htm
So, if you're willing, I would appreciate descriptions of your experiences,
whether good or bad, in making microgravity demonstrations. Thanks.
