Salaams to all

I believe some of you may not have had a chance to see my email which was sent on the maikolachi googlegroups.  It is attached herewith for your ready reference.

I also want to mention that Dr. Sohail Ansari just called from London.  Undoubtedly, he too sounded disappointed with the events of the last week and was wondering if this project would takeoff.  I am confident, it will, God willing.

Thanks and regards

Subject: LET US NOT GIVE UP, FRIENDS OF KARACHI
Date: Sat, 15 Jun 2013 19:33:44 +0500

The unfortunate events of the past week have been extremely distressing, to say the least, for me and many of you, I reckon.  This is not how anyone would have liked events to unfold and a well-intentioned initiative to come to a standstill soon after it had commenced.  In a way, I feel, this was a blessing in disguise.  In that, the true intent and character of some is now out in the open, especially of those who are really well-meaning and highly honorable and dignified Karachites.  I would be amiss if I did not appreciate calls and messages of support and understanding I received from many of you after my last email.  A BIG THANK TO THEM.

I appeal to all committed and honorable men and women who I met at Azmi Saheb’s residence to not give up on your dream of bringing this CTB-project to fruition, and that too just because of few self-centered, power-hungry and commercially-greedy people.  They already stand out isolated and removed from the rest of us.  Karachi belongs to you, me and to all those who live here, and love it despite its many problems, failings and shortcomings.  In order to change Karachi, and its negative perception, one has to be in it and be a part of it.  Karachi does not deserve the kind of publicity and condemnation that it has been receiving in the media.  It is about time we changed that outlook so that it rather becomes deserving of widespread acclamation.

To me and to my family (although apart from me none of the immediate family members is a Karachite by birth) Karachi is everything.  It has given me whatever I have ever wanted from it.  Now, for me, it is payback time not only for the sake of Karachites, but more so for my immediate family who have a deep sense of belonging to this city; each family member is as passionate about Karachi as I am…in all likelihood more.

I am extremely grateful to Dr. Saeed Ismail for his much valued suggestions, which he emailed on 10 June on the maikolachi Google group.  To me, they make a lot of sense.  His CV too is highly impressive.  It seems he not only has the right ideas, but also the relevant experience being associated with a number of health management, socio-economic and philanthropic programs.  During the last Saturday meeting his suggestions were quite practical – he sounded like a person who not only has the aptitude (experience), but also the right attitude (enthusiasm and energy) to lead the Society, as and when formed.  He will work well with the core team members and sub-teams, one hopes.

Apart from Dr. Saeed Ismail, I can safely assume that ALL members that I met at Azmi Saheb’s residence are extremely capable and equally enthusiastic (this was quite evident) about the CTB-project and other initiatives of the to-be formalized entity.  I believe, most are in it for purely altruistic reasons as opposed to commercial considerations.

I fully support the idea floated by Dr. Saeed Ismail that if 80 people can contribute Rs. 25,000 each, we will have Rs. 2 million to launch and publish the CTB on Karachi even without seeking a single rupee donation.  Please consider me the second person to volunteer a contribution of the suggested amount.  And yes, I do hold the four domain names in trust to be transferred to the Society when it is formed.

I want to make it abundantly clear that I seek no position on the Society’s core team or sub-teams, and no mention about any of my contributions in cash and kind to the Society.  I will do whatever is required of me and with full responsibility and professional integrity.  All I ask in return is respect and trust.  My only vested interest in the affairs of this Society is, and will remain, an opportunity to be of service to this beloved city and to my family.  I owe both of them a huge debt of gratitude, and much more.

In the end, I urge all of you to not let the embers that we recently lighted turn into ashes due to the misdeeds and ill-intent of some.  Rather, please let this Karachi mania spread like a wildfire.  I wish all of you Godspeed.

Warm regards

Mohammed Imani – If you are comfortable, please call me Mohammed because that happens to be my name…Imani is my family name.

Subject: LET THE TRUTH BE TOLD!

Dear CTB Friends

I think it is about time I came out in the open and told the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth.

A misperception has been created that I chose to leave this Group and to not participate in its future activities without assigning a reason.  This is far from the truth.  It is only due to the lack of respect and trust, which is quite evident from Danny’s emails (and messages he has been trying to convey through others) during and subsequent to the Saturday meeting, I was forced to make this very painful call.  And, I had to let Danny know in no uncertain terms how I felt about him and about his rude messages and emails.  Hence, there was no point in associating myself with him, or people like him, on what I consider to be a noble endeavor.  My motivation and enthusiasm for this project has certainly not died down, but is suppressed.

No two individuals or a group of people can subsist, leave alone work and achieve anything together, if the starting point of their relationship is disrespect, mistrust and disharmony.  Today, I am the one Danny has a problem with.  I can bet my last cent, if this is the way Danny operates and behaves (that he claims he does), then I will not be the last person in this Group he has had a problem with.

My fault, if any, was that I exuded enthusiasm about the CTB-Karachi project, I voiced my opinion, I gave suggestions, I volunteered to get real professionals engaged in formalizing and legalizing an entity, and in its many other activities.  And, the day following the meeting, I suggested by email that we should register a few domain names for the entity and that I would pay the cost of registration.  It is quite apparent from Danny’s emails that all this did not sit well with him.  I reckon, he thinks that just because he has started the FB page on Karachi, the entire control and ownership of this entity, and of its many projects to come, should remain with him, and the rest of us (and everything related to this project) should be under his exclusive command and control.  In fact, no self-respecting person can (and should) accept this kind of third-degree treatment from any individual.  Although Danny is the one who created this FB page, and nobody can take that away from him, however, little does he realize (and acknowledge) that this page would not have achieved the kind of popularity it has had it not been for the active and enthusiastic participation of thousands of Karachites.  He also does not realize that the idea of CTB was not his, BUT OF OTHERS.  In my email, which was sent to him on Tuesday (appended below), I have let Danny know what I think of him NOW…whether one appreciates it or not, I have minced no words.

There are many other emails in this chain which are appended below.  The ones I have sent are highlighted in yellow and those of Danny are highlighted in green.  There is also an email  from Javed Bhai that is in highlighted in turquoise.

BTW, it is already very late in the night, so I would like to conclude after making two quick points.

1.       I have already registered 4 domain names, which I hold in complete TRUST for the to-be formalized and legalized CTB entity.  This is the first of few modest contributions from me to the Group

2.       The minutes of the Saturday meeting are attached for your perusal and record

If this Group requires me to contribute in some ways I will try to do it to the best of my ability and with all sincerity and honesty.  And I will do it not as a favor, but rather as a duty and responsibility towards my children and fellow Karachites.  However, it will be well-nigh impossible for me to directly engage with this Group and some very wonderful, passionate and committed individuals I have come to know if Danny and the likes of him try to remotely control the Group members with utter contempt and mistrust – as he says in his email addressed to me he starts any relationship by not trusting others, unless they prove themselves otherwise.

Sorry Danny, I have nothing to prove to you and others.  If you do not trust me, the problem is yours, not mine.  I am not the kind person who lets others run himself roughshod and be controlled like a puppet – something that is your way of dealing with people.  Having said that, if I had done something wrong or unethical (which I would never do for my dear life) than not only Danny, but any one of you would have been well within your rights to restrain and reprimand me.

I make no apologies to Danny (for whom I had respect before he proved otherwise) or to anyone else for expressing my true feelings in this email and the ones I had sent out earlier.   I feel extremely sad for having decided to quit this Group.  But given how things have panned out in the last few days, I feel need to carry through with this decision.  Otherwise, it will be difficult for me to make any useful contributions under these circumstances.

I wish all of you well and a lot of success.  May God bless you and your family.

Please do holler when I can be of any help to the Group or any individual concerned with it.  My contact details are given below.

Adios!

I dont understand your comments and as MI I dont know you that well so please refrain from making slanderous comments

I have always known Javed so I have full trust in him if that hurts your ego I cant help that as JST & I have known each other & fully trust each other 100%

You said you would send the minutes of the meeting & thats why I asked where they are if you did not wish to take this responsibility you shud not have volunteered

Certainly I dont trust anybody till they prove themselves as I have been stabbed many times by blindly trusting  persons.

If you dont wish to be a part of this project I will not force you as thats your personal decision.

This meeting was initiated just as a general one & yes in the end the buck stops here at my end as I am responsible for all funds/expenses & its my reputation that is at stake which I have built up unblemished or untarnished & hope to keep it that way , so I can  give a clear transparent picture to all concerned donors & thats the way I work.

I also want the domain name under my control as in the past I trusted blindly & got conned for such actions.

Your comments about grandeur & glory proves you dont know me at all & proves correctly you are an egoistic person as that's the least of my worries as I never ever started this page for personal glory my friend this was initially started to voice my disgust at what Karachi had begun.

If I am there or not this page will continue as nobody is indispensable & have already started a search for somebody else to take over as its getting late in life for me and also promised my family I will try & extricate myself from this & other fb pages I have as it takes too much time & effort & my business is suffering & have suffered personal losses due to doing some reunions etc where my personal stake was my own funds which JST is also aware of.  .

Best of luck to you

Best regards

Hi all members

It was good to see all attendees took part & thanks for participating & sharing ideas  & thanks to Shahbaz for hosting the 1st meeting.

My direct nominated rep in Karachi is Javed Safdar & Sohail Ansari in UK so please coordinate all matters with Javed in Karachi  regarding domains etc & domain will be www.isurewantmyoldkarachiback.com as it does not matter how long or short it is as its our original id &  as we are not trying to get a B2B website. If there is a technical hitch which I doubt we can shorten it to WWW.ISWMOKB.COM but dont think we need to do that. Sohail Ansari will coordinate matters regarding content etc
 .
Also we will must have rotations for holding the meetings at all core member homes as it brings harmony & we get to know members better so next meeting will be at Maria's house as she has offered her host the next meeting on June 30th I believe correct me  if I  am wrong.

The domain will be registered in my name & Javed Safdar will pay the necessary funds for its registeration on my behalf .

Please lets get the minutes of the meeting as nothing received to date & await t he same asap thanks

I believe some members dont have gmail so they cant take part in gmail so lets just use normal emails till we can solve this problem.

Once again thanks for all your help & there will be additional core members such as  Rumana Hussain etc who will also be attending the next meeting.

I also have not received brief Cvs on many members who participated & p[lease send me the same asap so we can understand who is right for which task.

Best wishes to all & thanks for all your help & insights

The idea of a domain is an easy address. ‘I want my old Karachi back’ may sound very familiar to us who are on the FB page but for many others it may mean anything.

I would also once again request all to use the google group email as the existing thread does not have a few people who are on the google group. Example: Maria Shaikh and Maroof Imam.

“Brain is the industry standard name for a computer virus that was released in its first form in January 1986,[1] and is considered to be the first computer virus for MS-DOS. It infects the boot sector of storage media formatted with the DOS File Allocation Table (FAT) file system. Brain was written by two brothers, Basit Farooq Alvi and Amjad Farooq Alvi,[2] from LahorePakistan.”

Danny your name, if not in history books, will also be on Wikipedia soon.  God willing, for all the right reasons!

All of you have a lovely weekend…whatever is left of it.

Thanks and regards

Mohammed Imani

Hey Karachities how many of you have heard about Karachiitis Addictitus,
The only thing I blame my self for spreading is Karachiitis Addictitus which is an inherent incurable dieease which is what you catch as soon as you start reading the posts or posting the same & unfortunately there is no cure for this . As I shud know I have this disease since March 2012 & guess what it becomes worse & worse as families fight for your time & attention/affection but once you are hooked there is no cure. The only cure is that you have to give this disease which by the way is contagious to all family & friends so they can all get it to. By the way
Karachiitis Addictitus

is being mentioned in the American & British & Karachi medical journals as a very serious medical affliction/condition/problem & even CDC has found no cure for it.

By the way ew have plenty of doctors on this page & we should challenge them to find a cure immediately before it becomes an epidemic.

Dear Shahbaz, hello.

Greetings dear all.

I regret for being not being able to attend the meeting today.

However, this sounds like a very interesting project and I will be delighted to contribute in whatever capacity I can. Was part of it earlier too when the idea was initialised a few months back but could not keep track after it was delayed.

Have a few things in mind regarding the meetings and how we proceed. Will share here in a day.

In the meantime, I have a query. Was there any criteria to select this group for this work? Or is it only a brainstorming initial team and might add on as we move forward?

My name is Huma Iqbal. I am currently working as Communications Manager for a reproductive health social enterprise. Earlier to this, I worked as Media & PR Manager at The Citizens Foundation. Started my career in 2009, right after my masters in Mass Communications from Karachi University. Worked as an assistant editor at a political and economic magazine for 2 years and later joined the development sector.

I freelance for various publications including Dawn. Have taught current affairs and creative writing at the Karachi University. I like to travel and very  keen of reading and dreaming.

I work 16 hours a day and many times I am on field/travel. Might not be able to respond to email on a daily basis but being the journalist (some say a work freak) that I am, it cannot be an excuse to not stay connected!!

Looking forward to step 2.

Best.

Mohammed Imani is just like my little brother and I know him since he was a child, his sister Nafisa and my late sister Parveen were close friends in the 50s & 60s at Plaza Qrts, I fully vouch for him and I am sure he will bring a lot of value in whatever good we all intend to do.

As far as I am concerned Danny and I happen to be classmates at St. Patrick's College from 1969 to 1973 and have kept in touch since then on and off. After B.Com. I went into my family profession of law, however, had to wind up my Dad's old law office after his early death when I was too young and not qualified to continue his practice. After having worked as a pupil with a couple of very senior lawyers in 1977-78, I joined the law firm of Vellani & Vellani in 1979, left them in 1991 and worked as an in-house legal adviser for ICI Pakistan Ltd but rejoined Vellani in Dec 1992 and still there.

Most of my legal work involved advising MNCs & leading local clients on Intellectual Property and other general legal matters, having also conducted IP & other cases in the courts at Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, etc. Being in the IP field I was also required to travel abroad almost every year for IP conferences.

Born in Karachi in 1953 I went to the BVS Parsi High School, St. Patrick's College, S.M. Law College and to the IBA & British Council for short courses in Management, Computer Concepts and Advanced English.

I was a prefect and hockey captain at school and selected in the cricket and hockey teams of St. Pat's & S.M. Law Colleges, I also contributed articles and poems during my school & college days for the respective annual magazines and was elected the Chief Class Rep at St. Pat's College.

At present I am an Advocate of the High Court and a Senior Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Intellectual Property Rights Association (PIPRA).

I wish all the best to you all in our future noble endeavors.

Best regards,

Javed Safdar Tanwiri
