So looking at our finances it seems we have 2 options.

We could shell out for a 3d printer or we can spend the money and buy more general tools like a glue gun soldering iron etc

What are people's thoughts or is there anything you really want to see.

I think a protective surface for the workbench would be useful along with some soldering irons.

A large and small precision scew driver set.

Hot air gun for electronics and wiring.

A glue gun for various projects.

Standalone workbench with shelving.

Trying to think of our experiences during the robot build and whether there's any useful items we needed.

Agreed, we must have something to protect the desks if the desks are part of the room rent (which I believe someone said they were).

After that, we do need the basic kit Simon mentioned (how many times did we need a retractable tape measure when making the robot!)

We should probably have the following electronics equipment:
  • a decent soldering station
  • Solder fume hood (although the price of this we could probably get a better iron with build in fume extraction)
  • Hot air gun
  • Multimeter
  • logic analyser
  • oscilloscope
  • Dual output bench power supply
However, most of us will have soldering irons and hot glue guns at home, I always considered that a large reason for the space to exist is providing members the ability to use things most people don't have ready access to at home.

Whilst we need all this stuff (and we can always get a cheap soldering iron, glue gun, etc for the space to tide us over), what is it that people don't have access to at home that we should be looking to get?

We probably should also consider fixed short term loans of kit from members.
Perhaps a member can lend the Space a bit of kit for no more than 3 to 6 months, until the space can afford to purchase.

For example, I have an oscilloscope that I haven't used in 5 to 10 years, and a cheap logic analyser that I've used for one project.  I would be happy to lend these to the Space.  Having these things in the space would also tell us if other members would want to use these, if they haven't (or have hardly) been touched by the end of their loan we don't need to spend money purchasing something that wouldn't be used.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

First I should say a big well done for putting Maidstone Hack Space on the competition map so well last week.

(Was so rushed that I thought afterwards that I did not say enough about how pleased we were.)

Secondly, what is the overhead in 3d printing terms of making a "sand walker" that is powered by the wind. It looked lovely!

Think we need a better idea what you mean, is this an existing model or something that needs designing and what sort of size ?

what do you mean by over head time to print cost or time to design if thats needed.

if you have a link to something you had in mind that might help

This is available on thingiverse.com. Jackie I can print you a miniature wind powered sculpture if you like?

With regards to the Hackspace equipment Ian makes a very good point, do members want priority placed on equipment that usually they wouldn’t have access to?

I am still hoping to get the time to pop in but the tax office caused a huge prob with the children's university funding and between that and a few other things I have been rushed off my feet!

However can I beg some advice on line. I just turned on the computer when I came back from work and it thinks I live in Wrexham!! Why?? And how do I stop it because when I look up on Google maps I can just put in a new location, but when I look for ads on Gumtree they are all near there and not near me, and I cannot find anyone on facebook. I did fall asleep in front of it a couple of nights ago and when I woke up it seemed to be doing its own thing again and I struggled to get things to close! However I dont think I was living in Wrexham before I went to work!!

Many thanks Jackie!!

Short answer is you can't.

Unless you run a vpn or an anonymous browsing software which could be the cause.
Especially if it's just one device and not all of them in the house.

The internet gets your location using a few methods but generally they use a service called geoip which matches a range of IP addresses to a location based on what your provider submits to its database (Google maps is a bit more clever).

If you Google a geoip lookup tool, you'll find that it puts your location there. It's never been perfect but does a reasonable job of getting the right town.
All you can do is wait for your ISP to fix it. (Some isp's deliberately don't submit the correct location for privacy reasons)

Hmm strange.

So Google maps use things like GPS locations on mobile devices logged into the same account etc. and nearby detectable WiFi access points.

It's unlikely to help but try clearing your browser cookies. It will clear out any stuck sessions that might be misreporting your location.
(If you don't know where that is, what browser are you using and I'm sure someone on here will know how to clear them)

Further investigations have proved that all devices attached to the Zen router think they are in Wrexham!

When linked to another router, they no longer think they are in Wrexham.

No one in this house has used or even knows what vpn or anonymous browsing software is.

Damien at Zen technical support did not suggest turning the router off and on again.

He suggested a factory default reset. I asked how it would explain how this happened, or stop it reoccurring.

After conferring he said he had got it wrong and it was nothing to do with the router.

He asked us to change settings in Windows 10, none of which changed it from Wrexham.

When I asked to raise a complaint he said another colleague would phone me back in 10 minutes.

Ben said it was all to do with websites we accessed asking for our location, and it being difficult to find.

I said if the location swaps each time we leave the Zen router, I thought he was talking rubbish.

He then said as I was able to access websites , Zen had done their job.

He said I would have to learn to manually override the locations in searches inebay, Facebook etc to get the right areas.

I complained and asked to speak to a second line support person and he said he would arrange it.

I doubt they will have any idea how to fix it. Has anyone any idea?  Many thanks Jackie

Is the "other router" on the same internet connection or do you mean at work/coffee shops/friends etc?
If the zen router and internet connection is the only place you are experiencing the issue then its nothing to do with your pc or anything you can fix.

Zen internet is based in Rochdale but previously has staff at two other sites including one in Wrexham. This is where the issue stems from.

The only think that might possibly help is to clear your browsing cache and cookies from your PC but I doubt that will have any effect.

If the issue is what I think it is, them I'm affraid Ben is right about the location being difficult to find. If you deny websites access to your location and or don't have a good module in your laptop/pc or have your location turned off on your phone etc, then websites make a best guess based on your IP, in this case Zen has registered their IPs as based in Wrexham. When you go onto another network, their IPs could be registered to a more local location and so, your location appears to be correct.

Unfortunately the only work around is to manually set your location on individual sites as Ben has said.
