Hi, I just joined the group and live in Downswood.

I am trying to design a screen surround for a 7 inch touch screen, and the next stage is laser cutting. I need to look in to getting my own laser cutter as hobby cutting services are way too expensive ( £75 quid per small a5 sheet - by the time i experiment with 5 or 6 versions i might as well have bought my own! ), and I am looking for advice.

I see an number of cheap-ish 40W laser cutters from china on ebay, and they look very similar to these guys www.hpclaser.co.uk - who seem to charge 3 times as much for them.

Does anyone have any advice, or can offer me any help ?

Ian.

Hi Ian,

A laser cutter is something we would love to have at the space, the main thing I know about the chinese ones is often the software is not very good its tied to specific dongles and does not tend to get updates.

I have no idea if hpclaser is any better on this front but its worth considering, I am by no means an expert and this is based on what I know about the london hackspace laser and other people comments I have read.

Would be interested in hearing your thoughts on what ever laser cutter you end up with.

Others maybe able to offer advice but I am not aware of any of our member owning there own laser cutter.

Thanks Oly.

If i do get one, I would gladly offer up limited use of it to other members.

Hi All,

I have been lucky enough to pick up a K40 laser cutter really cheap off ebay ( only used once apparently ).

my plan is to fit air assist, and exhaust assist, and initally use K40Whisperer. then possibly upgrade the board to one of these...

if it makes a difference.

anyway, as I said above, if anyone if the maidstone hackspace needs some small laser cutting done, i'm more than happy to offer my services ( small fee ) as long as im not swamped with requests :-)

I think at might do 5mm acrylic on a double cut run and possible 4mm ply. I am yet to build an adjustable z table so its not all set up just yet
