Translation of Imam Al-Awza'ee's Letter of Warning against Bid'ah and Innovators

Imam Al-Awza'ee's Letter of Warning against Bid'ah and Innovators

It is reported that Imam Al-Awza'ee [ رحمه الله , rahimahullaah, may Allaah have mercy on him, died 157H] wrote:

"O Muslims, fear Allaah and obey Him, and accept the advice of the sincere advisers and the exhortation of the exhorters, and know that this knowledge is religion, so be careful about what you do [in it], and from whom you take [it], and who you follow, and who you trust your religion to. For verily, the followers of Bid'ah are all falsifiers and liars, neither are they careful nor do they fear and protect [against wrongdoing], and nor are they to be trusted to not distort what you hear. They say what they know not when criticizing and decrying or when affirming their lies. But Allaah encompasses what they do. So be on guard against them, suspect them, reject them and distance yourselves from them, for this was what your earlier scholars and the righteous latter ones did and instructed others to do.

Beware of rising against Allaah and becoming instruments in the destruction of His religion and undoing its handholds by respecting the innovators, for you know what has come down to us about respecting them. And what stronger respect and veneration can there be than taking your religion from them, following them, believing them, being close to them and helping them in alluring those they allure and attracting those they attract of the weak Muslims towards their ideas and the religion they practice? This is enough to be considered a partnership and contribution to what they do."

- Ibn 'Asakir, Tarikh Dimishq 6:361, 362.

He waited for three days to meet someone so he could listen to a single hadeeth

Abu Qilaabah (rahimahullaah, may Allaah have mercy on him) waited three days just so he could hear a single hadeeth, he was so keen to correctly learn the deen of
 Islam.

Abu Qilaabah [ رحمه الله , rahimahullaah, may Allaah have mercy on him, died 104AH] said:
"I stayed in Al-Madeenah for three days. Though I had finished from all that I needed to do, I had to wait for a man whom people thought that he knew a Hadeeth which he used to narrate. So I waited until he came and I asked him about the Hadeeth."
Recorded in Ad-Daarimi (581).

[Additional Note: Abu Qilaabah ( رحمه الله , rahimahullaah, may Allaah have mercy on him, died 104AH) was from the Tabi'een (Successors) and he was a student of the noble companion Anas bin Malik (رضى الله تعالى عنه , may Allaah be pleased with him, died 93AH). ]

Consider that We live in a time where often many brothers and sisters say "I don't have time ..." when it comes to seeking knowledge of Islam. Often many want quick results and quick study of Islam. Many subjects are often covered in a small number of sittings. Contrast that approach with the approach of the Salaf who were diligent and patient in seeking knowledge of Islam. Abu Qilaabah ( رحمه الله , rahimahullaah) waited three days just so he could hear a single hadeeth, he was so keen to learn the deen of Islam.

"How are you today?"

Al-Murrudi’ reported that he asked Imam Ahmed [ رحمه الله  , rahimahullaah, may Allaah have mercy on him, died 241AH]:
“How are you today?”

He [Imam Ahmed ( رحمه الله  , rahimahullaah)] replied:
‘How can I be while I am required by my Lord [Allaah سبحانه و تعالى , Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, Glorified and Exalted be He] to perform obligatory acts of worship, by my Prophet [ صلى الله عليه و سلم  , sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, Allaah mention him in the highest of gatherings] to practice his Sunnah, by the two angels to improve my deeds, and my soul urges me to follow it, Shaytaan pushes me to commit evil deeds, the Angel of death is waiting to take my life, and my children are asking me to provide for them?’”
Recorded in Siyaar a'laam an Nubalaa 11/227.

'I heard this from you.'

Basheer Ibn Nuhayk [ رحمه الله  , rahimahullaah, may Allaah have mercy on him, died 80 AH] said: 'I came to Abu Hurayrah  [ رضى الله تعالى عنه  , radiyallahu 'anhu, may Allaah be pleased with him, died 59AH] with my book which I used to write in. So I read to him from it and I said: 'I heard this from you.' He said: 'Yes.' "
Recorded in Tahdheeb (1/470) and also Tirmidthi (4/396), and by al-Khateeb in al-Kifaayah (no. 283), and Ibn Sa'ad (7/1/no. 162). It is also recorded in a similar wording by Al-Khateeb in Taqyeed Al-'Ilm.

[Additional Note:  Basheer Ibn Nuhayk [ رحمه الله , rahimahullaah] was one of the student's of Abu Hurayrah  [ رضى الله تعالى عنه , radiyallahu 'anhu] and this conversation took place when he was leaving the company of Abu Hurayrah [ رضى الله تعالى عنه ].

This narration proves that hadith’s were recorded and checked by many students studying under the Noble Companions (may Allaah be pleased with them all).]

Imaam Abul-Mudthaffar as-Sam'aanee [ رحمه الله  , rahimahullaah, may Allaah have mercy on him, died 498AH] said:
“The people of the Sunnah say: 'The foundation of the Religion is following (Ittibaa'), and the intellect is subservient.' So if the foundation of the Religion was left to the intellect, the creation would have been in no need of Revelation, nor of Prophets, and the commands and prohibitions would have no meaning, and anyone could have said whatever he wanted.”

'The isnaad with me is from the religion.'

Muhammad Ibn 'Abdullaah Ibn Quhzadh from the people of Marw narrated to me, he said: I heard 'Abdaan Ibn 'Uthmaan say: I heard 'Abdullah Ibnul-Mubaarak [ رحمه الله  , rahimahullaah, may Allaah have mercy on him, died 181AH] say:
"The isnaad (chain of narration) with me is from the religion. If not for isnaad whoever pleased could say whatever he pleased. "
Recorded in the Introduction to the صحيح  Saheeh of Imaam Muslim.

[Additional Note:
Brief Biography of 'Abdullah Ibn-Mubaarak [ رحمه الله  , rahimahullaah, may Allaah have mercy on him, died 181AH]

Some of the Scholars he studied under:
Imaam Maalik bin Anas ( رحمه الله , died 179AH), Sufayaan Ath-Thawree (رحمه الله , died 167AH), Sufayaan Ibn Uyaynah (رحمه الله , died 197AH), Hisham ibn Urwah (رحمه الله , died 146AH), Aasim Al-Ahwaal (رحمه الله , died 140AH), Sulaymaan At-Taymee (رحمه الله , died 143AH) and Humaid At-Taweel (رحمه الله , died 142AH) and all were notable scholars from the Salaf.

Although Sufayaan Ath-Thawree was a teacher of 'Abdullah Ibn-Mubaarak and was a major scholar of Islam, he also narrated hadith from 'Abdullah Ibn-Mubaarak. Sufayaan Ath-Thawree also used to wish to spend his days and nights as Ibn Mubaarak used to but was not able to. Ibn-Mubaarak was much loved and known for his piety and this was in a time of major scholars of Islam.

Qutaibah Ibn Saeed (رحمه الله , died 276AH) [One of the Shaykh's of Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawoud, Nasa'ee, Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah] said: The best person in our time is ibn-Mubarak and then imam Ahmad bin Hanbal.

Some students of 'Abdullah Ibn Mubaarak:
Abdur Rahmaan bin Mahdi,  Yahya ibn Ma'een, Ibn Abi Shaybah and Hasan bin Urfah. All of them were notable scholars from the Salaf.

The Source of Correct Knowledge of the Deen

'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud [رضى الله تعالى عنه  ,  may Allah be pleased with him] said:
"The people will remain upon goodness as long as knowledge comes to them from the Companions of Allah’s Messenger [ صلى الله عليه و سلم     , Allah mention him in the highest of gatherings] and from their seniors. But when knowledge comes to them from their minors, that is when they will be destroyed."
Ibn ‘Abd Al-Barr, Jami’ Bayan Al-’Ilm wa Fadlihi article 1060.

[Additional Note: To follow the correct path one needs to follow the teaching of the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه و سلم  , Allah mention him in the highest of gatherings) upon the understanding of the noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) and the senior scholars who follow them in that understanding. Scholars are known to each other and they recommend each other and warn against individuals and groups that do not have to correct understanding. Know who you take your knowledge of the deen from and stick to the senior scholars as this is a principle outlined by 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضى الله تعالى عنه  ,  may Allah be pleased with him).]

'... Stick to them before they disappear ...'

Shaykh ‘Abd al-Salam Ibn Burjis [ رحمه الله  , rahimahullaah, may Allaah have mercy on him, died 1425AH] said:
“O student! '… know that every type of innovation is rejected …'

'… know that every type of innovation is rejected …'

Shaykh Hafidh Ibn Ahmed Al-Hakami [ رحمه الله  , may Allaah have mercy on him, died 1377AH] said, "Then know that every type of innovation is rejected and there is not a thing from it which is accepted, all of it is ugly and nothing of it is good, all of it is misguidance and there isn’t in it any guidance, all of it is sin and there isn’t in it any reward, all of it is falsehood and there isn’t in it any truth. And the meaning of innovation is to legislate that which Allaah [سبحانه و تعالى  , Glorified and Exalted be He] has not given permission for and an affair the Prophet [ صلى الله عليه و سلم  ,  Allaah mention him in the highest of gatherings] and his companions where not upon. For this reason the Prophet [ صلى الله عليه و سلم  ,  Allaah mention him in the highest of gatherings] explained innovation with his statement as being: "an action which is not in accordance with our affair". And he
[ صلى الله عليه و سلم  ,  Allaah mention him in the highest of gatherings] described the saved sect from the seventy three sects with his statement: "They are the Jamaa’ah" and in a narration "they are those who are upon what I and my companions are upon". "

[Short Biography of Shaykh Hafidh Ibn Ahmed Al-Hakami [ رحمه الله  , may Allaah have mercy on him, died 1377AH]

Shaykh Hafidh Ibn Ahmed Al-Hakami was born in Ramadhaan, 1342AH in the village of as-Salaam, which is south-east of the city of Jaazaan. As a small boy he moved with parts of his family to al-Jaadi which is close to the city of Saamitah. As a young boy he worked as a sheppard tending sheep for his family.

At the age of seven his father put the Shaykh and his older Brother Muhammad (also a respected scholar in his own right) into Qur'aan memorisation school. The Shaykh learned to read the entire Qur'an with proper rules of tajweed in a few months. He also learnt writing skills andwas able to write the Qur'an with skill. The Shaykh also studied books of fiqh, inheritance law, hadeeth and tafseer with his father. By the age of twelve he had memorised the entire Qur'an.

In 1358AH, the noble Shaykh 'Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Hamad al-Qar'aawee moved to the Southern Area of Saudi Arabia after learning about the lack of knowledge and spread of innovation in the area. The Shaykh expended great efforts to teach people the correct knowledge of Islam. In 1359AH the young Shaykh Muhammad, went with a letter on behalf of himself and his brother Hafidh, with a request for books on Tawheed and for Shaykh al-Qar'aawee to visit them to teach them some lessons. Shaykh al-Qar'aawee accepted. The Shaykh taught young and old in the village and whilst teaching he noticed that Shaykh Hafidh was the youngest but also the quickest to memorise and understand. Shaykh al-Qar'aawee asked Shaykh Hafidh's parents if he could take their sons with him to teach them and in return he would pay for someone to be employed to tend to their sheep. Shaykh Hafidh's parents refused but shortly afterwards the Shaykh's mother died and his father decided to allow his sons to go and study with Shaykh al-Qar'aawee for a number of days a week. In the same year Shaykh Hafidh's father passed away as well. So Shaykh Hafidh stayed with Shaykh al-Qar'aawee to learn.

At the age of nineteen Shaykh Hafidh was asked by Shaykh al-Qar'aawee to write a book on Tawheed and the creed of the Pious Predecessors that would be easy to understand and memorise, so Shaykh Hafidh wrote Sullam-ul-Wusool ilaa 'Ilm-il-Usool fee at-Tawheed in 1362AH. he then wrote books on Tawheed, hadeeth, fiqh, Seerah and others which were published with the aid of King Saud ibn 'Abdul-Azeez.

Shaykh Hafidh was then appointed a teacher and provided great benefit to many students. He then became as assistant to Shaykh al-Qar'aawee.

In 1377AH, Shaykh Hafidh went to perform Hajj and after completing the rights of Hajj, the Shaykh died in Makkah from a sudden illness on 18th Dhul-Hijjah, he was 35 years old.

May Allaah [ سبحانه و تعالى , Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, Glorified and Exalted be He] have mercy upon him.]

'… this knowledge is greater than every other need …'

'… this knowledge is greater than every other need …'

Imaam Ibn Abil-'Izz al- Hanafee [ رحمه الله  , may Allaah have mercy on him, died 792AH] said,
"Knowledge of the fundamentals of the Religion is the most noble branch of knowledge, since the excellence of a certain type of knowledge depends upon what it is concerned with, and this is the greater fiqh (understanding), which is why lmaam Aboo Haneefah [ رحمه الله  , may Allaah have mercy on him, died 150AH] called that which he compiled concerning Usool-ud-Deen: 'al-Fiqhul-Akbar' (the greatest fiqh). The need of the servants for this knowledge is greater than every other need; and it is the most necessary of all things for them, since there is no life for the hearts, nor any delight, nor any tranquillity, except through knowing their Lord, the One to be worshipped, their Creator - with His Names, His Attributes and His Actions, and that He - along with all that - is more beloved to the person than anything else. So man's striving is with regards to everything that will draw him nearer to God, to the exclusion of the creation.

However, it is impossible for the minds to come to know and understand all that in detail, so the Most Merciful, the Most Majestic - from His Mercy, sent Messengers to teach that and call to it; and to give good news to those who accept their call and to warn those who reject it. The key to their call and the essence of their message was the servant's drawing closer to Allaah - the Most Perfect - through His Names, Attributes and Actions, since all that the Messengers were ordered with is built upon this. This then
is followed by two great principles:

Firstly: Knowing the path that leads to Him and that is the Sharee'ah which is comprised of His orders and prohibitions.

Secondly: That those following the path know what lies in store for them, which is endless bliss.

So the people who know God best are the ones who best follow the way to Him; and know best what lies at the end of the way."
Sharhul'Aqeedatit-Tahaawiyyah (p. 69).

Rinsing the mouth after drinking milk - Hadith حديث

Ibn Abbas [رضى الله تعالى عنه  ,  may Allaah be pleased with him] narrated, The Prophet [ صلى الله عليه و سلم  ,  Allaah mention him in the highest of gatherings] drank some milk then called for some water. Once he got the water he rinsed his mouth then said, "It has fat."
Recorded in  صحيح البخاري  Sahih Bukhari and  صحيح مسلم  Sahih Muslim.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen [ رحمه الله , may Allaah have mercy on him, died 1421AH] said, "The reason why the Prophet [ صلى الله عليه و سلم  ,  Allaah mention him in the highest of gatherings] rinsed his mouth was because of the fat. It can be understood from this action that it's legislated to rinse the mouth from all foods which contain fat, regardless whether drank or chewed. Its good manners to rinse the mouth afterwards to remove the fat. If the substance is heavy in fat, then it's better to use siwak. For this reason the scholars say:  it's sunnah to use siwak to remove any fat after eating if the smell of the mouth changed.

On the authority of Samurah bin Sahm, who said:
"I went to Abû Hashim ibn 'Utbah [رضى الله تعالى عنه  ,  may Allah be pleased with him] and he had a knife wound. So Mua'wiyah came to visit him, and Abû Hashim was crying. So Mua'wiyah asked: "What is it that makes you cry, O Uncle?! Is it the pain or is it for the world (that you are crying)?" He replied, "Neither, but the Messenger of Allah [ صلى الله عليه و سلم  ,  Allah mention him in the highest of gatherings] entrusted me with a trust and I wish that I had carried it out." He [ صلى الله عليه و سلم  ,  Allah mention him in the highest of gatherings] said, "Verily you may attain some of the wealth which will be divided between the people. Indeed, sufficient for you is: a servant and a riding animal for the sake of Allâh." So I did attain this wealth and accumulated it (i.e. he acquired more than what the Prophet [ صلى الله عليه و سلم  ,  Allah mention him in the highest of gatherings] advised him to suffice himself with)."

'... it is obligatory on anyone who hears …'

'... it is obligatory on anyone who hears …'

Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali ( رحمه الله , rahimahullaah, may Allaah have mercy on him, died 795AH) says:
"Therefore it is obligatory on anyone who hears of a [authentic] command of the Messenger of Allaah [ صلى الله عليه و سلم , sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, Allaah mention him in the highest of gatherings] or knows it, to explain it to the Ummah, advise them sincerely, and order them to follow his command, even if it contradicts the opinion of someone great. This is because the authority of the Messenger of Allaah [ صلى الله عليه و سلم , sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, Allaah mention him in the highest of gatherings] has the most right to be respected and followed, over and above the opinion of anyone great who has unknowingly contradicted the Messenger's command in any matter. This is why the Companions and those after would refute anyone who contradicted the authentic Sunnah, sometimes being very stern in their refutation, not out of hatred for that person, for they loved and respected him, but because the Messenger of Allaah was more beloved to them, and his command was superior to the command of any other created being. Hence, when the order of the Messenger and that of someone else conflicted, the order of the Messenger would be more fitting to be enforced and followed. None of this would stop them respecting the person they had opposed because they knew that he would be forgiven; in fact, the latter would not mind his instruction being opposed when the command of the Messenger of Allaah [ صلى الله عليه و سلم , sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, Allaah mention him in the highest of gatherings] was clearly shown to be opposite."
Quoted in the notes on Eeqaaz al-Himam, p. 93.

'Allah Bears Witness …'

'Allah Bears Witness …'

الله‎ Allah [ سبحانه و تعالى , Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, Glorified and Exalted be He] says,

"Allâh bears witness that Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also give this witness); (He always) maintains His creation in justice. Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise."
[ القرآن الكريم The Noble Qur'aan,  سورة آل عمران Soorah Aal-'Imraan - (The Family of 'Imraan) 003, Verses 018]
[Translation - "Interpretation of the Meaning of The Noble Qur'aan in the English Language" By Dr. Muhammad Taqiuddeen al-Hilaalee, Ph.D. and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan, Published By Darussalam.]

al-Mubarakfuri [rahimahullaah, died 1426AH] summarised the explanation of these verses from Tafsir Ibn Kathir which was written by the notable scholar Ibn Kathir [rahimahullaah, died 774AH] as follows:
"The Testimony of Tawhid

Allah bears witness, and verily, Allah is sufficient as a Witness, and He is the Most Truthful and Just Witness there is; His statement is the absolute truth,

أَنَّهُ لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ

(that La ilaha illa Huwa) meaning, He Alone is the Lord and God of all creation; everyone and everything are His servants, creation and in need of Him. Allah is the Most Rich, Free from needing anyone or anything. Allah said in another Ayah,

لَّـكِنِ اللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ بِمَآ أَنزَلَ إِلَيْكَ

(But Allah bears witness to that which He has sent down (the Qur'an) unto you (O Muhammad )) (4:166).

Allah then mentioned the testimony of His angels and those who have knowledge after he mentioned His own testimony,

شَهِدَ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُ لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ وَالْمَلَـئِكَةُ وَأُوْلُواْ الْعِلْمِ

(Allah bears witness that none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also bear witness to this)). This Ayah emphasizes the great virtue of those who have knowledge.

قَآئِمَاً بِالْقِسْطِ

((He) maintains His creation in justice) in all that He does,

لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ

(None has the right to be worshipped but He) thus emphasizing this fact,

العَزِيزُ الحَكِيمُ

(the Almighty, the All-Wise.) the Mighty that does not submit to weakness due to His might and greatness, the Wise in all His statements, actions, legislation and decrees."

Shaykh Rabee bin Haadee Umayr al-Madkhalee ( حفظه الله , hafidhahullaah, may Allaah preserve him upon the truth ) said when explaining this hadeeth:
"... This hadeeth contains a great educational principle, which is that whoever wishes to be moulded by lofty characteristics as truthfulness, patience and bravery, then let him strive, pursue and persist in them. So striving for truthfulness and by adhering to it he becomes truthful. And by perservering and enduring hardships he becomes patient and one who possesses good manners. By persisting in depravity and striving in it the individual becomes a liar and corrupt."

"Whoever wants to know …"

The Messenger Of Allah [ صلى الله عليه و سلم  ,  may Allah exalt his mention and render him and his message safe from every derogatory thing ] said,
"Whoever wants to know what Allah [ سبحانه و تعالى  , Glorified and Exalted be He] has prepared for him, then he should look at what he has prepared for Allaah."

Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal [ رحمه الله  , may Allaah have mercy on him, died 241AH] recorded from Muhammad bin Abi ‘Amirah [رضى الله تعالى عنه  ,  may Allaah be pleased with him] who was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah [ صلى الله عليه و سلم  ,  may Allah exalt his mention and render him and his message safe from every derogatory thing ].
He said, "If a servant fell down on his face (in prostration) from the day that he was born until the day he died as an old man, in obedience to Allah, he would scorn this act on the Day of Judgement. He would wish to be returned to this life so that he could earn more reward and compensation."

"By Allaah, I will not aid you in ..." - Aqeedah عقيدة

Ath-Thahabee reported:
"One of the prison guards said to Muhammad Ibn Sireen (رحمه الله  , May Allah have Mercy on him, died 110AH) (when he was imprisoned):
'When the night arrives, visit your family and when you wake up, then return.'

He (Ibn Sireen) said: "By Allaah, I will not aid you in deceiving the ruler.'"
Siyar A'laam an-Nubalaa (4/332).

[Additional Note: Whilst Ibn Sireen was imprisoned by the ruler he did not even want to deceive him despite being given an opportunity to do so. Today people go further and speak ill of the rulers and they abuse them. They will fight them, rebel against them and make takfeer of many of them. They claim that the rulers of today are not like the rulers of the past, but they do not provide any proof that the deen makes it permissible to speak ill of the rulers in any time, or rebel against them unless very strict conditions are met.

So follow correctly the way of the Salaf by knowledge, actions and deeds.]

The Night of Decree

The Night of Decree

الله‎ Allah [ سبحانه و تعالى , Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, Glorified and Exalted be He] says,

“Verily, We have sent it (this Qur'ân) down in the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree).

And what will make you know what the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is?

The Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allâh in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months).”
[ القرآن الكريم  The Noble Qur'aan, سورة القدر Soorah al-Qadr - (The Night of Decree) 097, Verses 001 – 003 ]

“… I know the last of …” - Hadith حديث

“… I know the last of …”

Abdullah b. Mas'ud [ رضى الله تعالى عنه  ,  may Allah be pleased with him ] :
reported that the Messenger of Allaah
[ صلى الله عليه و سلم  ,  may Allah exalt his mention and render him and his message safe from every derogatory thing ] said: I know the last of the inhabitants of Fire to be taken out therefrom, and the last of the inhabitants of Paradise to enter it. A man will come out of the Fire crawling. Then Allaah, the Blessed and Exalted will say to him: Go and enter Paradise. So he would come to it and it would appear to him as if it were full. He would go back and say: O my Lord! I found it full. Allaah, the Blessed and Exalted, would say to him: Go and enter Paradise. He would come and perceive as if it were full. He would return and say: O my Lord! I found it full. Allaah would say to him: Go and enter Paradise, for there is for you the like of the world and ten times like it, or for you is ten times the like of this world. He (the narrator) said. He (that man) would say: Art Thou making a fun of me? or Art Thou laughing at me. though Thou art the King? He (the narrator) said: I saw the Messenger of Allaah laugh till his front teeth were visible. And it was said: That would be the lowest rank among the inhabitants of Paradise.

“… from the exhalation of Hell …” - Hadith حديث

“… from the exhalation of Hell …”

Abu Huraira [ رضى الله تعالى عنه  ,  may Allah be pleased with him ] reported that the Messenger of Allaah [ صلى الله عليه و سلم  ,  may Allah exalt his mention and render him and his message safe from every derogatory thing ] said:
"The Fire said to the Lord: O Lord! some parts of mine have consumed the others, so allow me to exhale (in order to find some relief from this congestion). It was granted permission to take two exhalations, one exhalation during the winter and the other exhalation during the summer So whatever you perceive in the form of intense cold or hurting cold is from the exhalation of Hell. And whatever you perceive in the form of extreme heat or intense heat is from the exhalation of Hell."
Recorded in Saheeh Muslim.

Additional Note:

Al ‘Aynee (rahimahullah, died 855AH) stated:

There is nothing to prevent Zamhareer (extreme coldness) from emitting from the same Hell fire, because what is meant by ‘the Hell fire’ is its place, which is Jahannam, and there is a level of Zamhareer in it.

It was said that there is no contradiction here in combining between heat and cold in the Hell fire, because the Hell fire is Jahannam, and it has been narrated that parts of it are fire and other parts are Zamhareer, and they are not in the same place, it is impossible that they are combined in one place.

I say [Al ‘Aynee]: The One who created the dominion including ice and fire, is able to combine two opposites in one place. In addition, the Hell fire is from the affairs of the unseen, and the affairs of the unseen are not to be compared to the affairs of this world.
[‘Umdat al Qaaree: 7350]
