Butlers and Stress

When a Butler's Stress has exceeded their Spirit rating, that means they have to spend Favor to lower it back down. But what happens if they don't currently have enough Favor to lower their Stress below their Spirit?

Does their Stress stay the same, but any future gains of Favor get instantly taken away to immediately go towards lowering their Stress to get back below their Spirit?

Or do they have to immediately lower one of their Attributes to receive Favor back in the same way as what happens when a maid or butler's Favor goes below zero?

From what I've discerned from the rulebook, the butler would have to lower a stat, receive the appropriate favor for downgrading, and then spend favor to remove that stress.
