Duringthe early 1920s on an alternate Earth, an Imperial Germany-esque power (known as the Empire) rules over a large portion of alternate Europe and possesses a high degree of industrial and military might, but is surrounded on all sides by many potential enemies and few allies. War eventually breaks out between the Empire and its enemies: the Francois Republic and the Legadonia Entente Alliance (analogous to real-world France and Sweden/Norway respectively). A young girl, Tanya Degurechaff, is recruited into the Empire's Mage Corps for the war effort. Unbeknownst to everyone but her, Tanya is actually a reincarnated Japanese salaryman, whose staunch atheism and refusal to acknowledge a powerful deity as 'God' in the moments before his death causes the deity to reincarnate him into a young girl in an alternate war-torn Europe as punishment.saga of tanya the evil is mainly based off of world war 1

The Saga of Tanya the Evil, known in Japan as Yōjo Senki (幼女戦記, lit. "The Military Chronicles of a Little Girl"), is a Japanese light novel series written by Carlo Zen and illustrated by Shinobu Shinotsuki. It began serialization online in 2010, on the user-generated novel publishing website Arcadia. Enterbrain acquired the series in October 2013 and has published fourteen volumes by September 2023. A manga adaptation with art by Chika Tōjō began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's Comp Ace magazine from April 2016.

An anime television series adaptation by NUT was broadcast on Japanese television from January to March 2017, and was licensed by Funimation, Crunchyroll and Medialink. Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie, a theatrical film taking place after the events of the anime series, was released in Japan in February 2019. A second season has been announced.

In 2013 of modern-era Tokyo, an unnamed atheist Japanese salaryman, in the moment of being murdered by a disgruntled subordinate whom he had fired due to poor performance at work, is confronted by an entity that declares itself to be God who condemns the salaryman for not having 'faith'. The salaryman disbelieves in its existence, criticises its various statements from his perspective as an atheist and mockingly terms it as 'Being X'. The entity decides to reincarnate the salaryman into a world where he would face sufficiently difficult circumstances to turn to Being X for help.

The salaryman is reborn as Tanya Degurechaff, an orphaned girl in an alternate universe's equivalent of Imperial Germany, known as the Empire, in which World War I has been delayed until the 1920s and where magic has been incorporated into the military. According to Being X, if Tanya either does not die a natural death or refuses to have faith in it, her soul will leave the cycle of reincarnation and will be sent to hell for the countless sins that Tanya has committed in her previous life. In search for an escape, Tanya decides to join the Empire's Mage Corps and fight in the war, hoping to reach a high enough rank as fast as possible to remain far from the battlefield, and in this way avoid the risk of being killed. Even if she's now forced to speak with a young girl's lips, Tanya soon turns into a ruthless soldier who prioritizes efficiency and her own career over anything else, even the lives of those beneath her, especially those that get on her bad side.

The novel series is written by Carlo Zen and was initially serialized on the web novel hosting website Arcadia,[8] before Enterbrain's acquisition. It was subsequently published as light novels with illustrations by Shinobu Shinotsuki. The first volume was released on October 31, 2013, and as of September 29, 2023, fourteen volumes have been released. A drama CD was released with the third volume.[9] It was licensed by Yen Press.[10]

On the 16th of November 2021, YenPress released an audiobook of the first light novel, read by the English voice actress for Tanya, Monica Rial. Volumes 2-6 were voiced by audiobook narrator Shiromi Arserio. Volumes 7-8 were done by Erin Rieman.

An anime television series adaptation by NUT aired from January 6 to March 31, 2017.[13][14][15] Crunchyroll and Funimation has licensed the series in North America.[16] The opening theme is "Jingo Jungle" by Myth & Roid and the ending theme is "Los! Los! Los!" by Aoi Yūki as Tanya Degurechaff.[7] A chibi parody short OVA produced by Studio Puyukai entitled Youjo Shenki premiered in January 2017. On June 19, 2021, a second season was announced. The main cast and staff are returning to reprise their roles.[17]

An anime film based on the franchise was announced in January 2018.[18] It was a direct sequel to the series.[19] The film premiered on February 8, 2019.[20] The film received a limited U.S. theater release on May 16, 2019, by Crunchyroll.[21] Crunchyroll and Anime Limited screened the film at MCM London Comic Con on May 26, 2019.[22] Crunchyroll also screened the film at Supanova Expo in Sydney and Perth in Australia on June 23 and June 30, 2019, respectively.[23]

Writing for Anime News Network, Nick Creamer says Saga of Tanya the Evil is differentiated from the majority of isekai anime that have heroic otaku or everyday young men as their protagonists by having Tanya be evil. Creamer explicitly says "Tanya's crimes are our crimes", indicting the capitalist system that produced her past self as a ruthless salaryman, and the consequences thereof for her new self.[26]

Saga of Tanya the Evil is an anime that explores the concept of isekai heroes reincarnating as various forms. The protagonist, Tanya the Evil, is a cutthroat atheist businessman who is reincarnated as a little girl in an alternate version of WWI Imperial Germany. The anime's compelling concept is based on the original Japanese web novel by Carlo Zen.

However, the saga has seemingly come to a halt, with no new content since the anime's 2019 movie sequel. Fortunately, the show is finally receiving its long-awaited second season, which promises to provide nourishment for fans of the series. Season 2 will feature new content and a new perspective on the characters' lives and experiences.

In June 2021, Kadokawa, the publisher of the manga adaptation and producer of the 2019 movie, announced the production of Season 2 of the anime Saga of Tanya the Evil. The anime's first season ended in 2017, and it had been two years by the time the Season 2 teaser dropped. The teaser confirmed that the story of Tanya will continue.

Unfortunately, the trailer contains no footage and consists only of Lieutenant General Hans von Zettour having a one-sided conversation about the current state of the Empire and also doesn't offer any release date, only confirming that, "Season 2 is now aggressively in production."

Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2 is expected to be released in Japan in 2024, with dubbed versions requiring longer waits. Despite the series' popularity and Crunchyroll's licensing, fans can expect Tanya to return in action by the Winter 2025 season, with no concrete release date yet.

In the 2019 movie, Tanya is transferred away from the front line to conduct research on combined arms tactics. Unexpectedly, Hans von Zettour informs her she will be given control of the 8th Kampfgruppe, a unit that combines tanks, artillery, and infantry. This move is orchestrated by Being X, who is determined to make Tanya a true believer, ties in to the mounting conflict in the Season 2 trailer.

As the trailer's voiceover explains, the Empire's warlike ways have earned them enemies on all sides. The world fears them, and so conflict is brewing once more. However, according to Zettour, there's a plan to "rectify the mistake," and that is to dispose of a single officer. This officer, we can assume, is none other than Tanya, but it's impossible to know that for sure until we learn more about Season 2.

The anime's first season is based on the first three volumes of the light novel, with the 2019 movie taking inspiration from Volume 4. Season 2 will follow the story from Volume 5, as winter approaches and the Empire's higher-ups must decide whether to attack or wait until the weather passes. Tanya's Salamander unit faces a mission that could determine the Empire's path and the war's fate.

The cast from Season 1 of Saga of Tanya The Evil, including Aoi Yuuki in the Japanese-language original and Monica Rial in the English dub, will return for Season 2, bringing back Tanya Degurechaff and her world.

Yuuki is best known for her roles in films like A Silent Voice and Your Name. She has also appeared in series like Pokmon and My Hero Academia. Veteran dub actor Monica Rial, known for My Hero Academia, voices the same character as Yuuki, Tsuyu Asui. Houston native Monica Rial is best known for voicing Bulma in the Dragon Ball franchise.

Visha, the deuteragonist of the story is voiced by Saori Hayami, with over 250 acting credits. She is best known for voicing Himawari Uzumaki in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. In the English version, Jeannie Tirado, known for her roles in anime, video games, and Disney movies, voices Principal Arroyo in 2020's Soul. Hayami has a diverse acting career, including roles in Your Lie in April and Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train.

The character of Mary Sioux, Tanya's nemesis, is voiced by Haruka Tomatsu in the original and Tia Ballard in the dub, while the knowledgeable and rational Zettour is played by Houchuu Ootsuka and Mark Stoddard.

Saga of Tanya the Evil was broadcasted on Japanese TV from January to March 2017. Crunchyroll, an anime streaming service for North American English-speaking viewers, acquired the rights and distributed Season 1 to its subscribers. As of 2023, all 12 episodes are available on Crunchyroll, with English subtitles or dubbed versions in Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, or English. Crunchyroll also hosts the 2019 film, Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie, in English and Spanish or Portuguese.
