One derivation of the word Dasera is from dashhara.
‘Dash’ means
ten and ‘hara’
means
defeated. Nine
days before
Dasera, that
is, in the
nine days of
Navratri, all
the ten
directions are
saturated with
the female
deity’s
(devi’s-Shakti)
energy.
‘Shakti’ has
control over
creation in
all the ten
directions
(dikbhav),
attendants
(gan), etc.
That is why
this day is
known as
Dashhara,
Dasera,
Vijayadashami,
etc.

A message from (H.H.) Dr Jayant Athavale on the
occasion of
Vijaya dashmi
Taking the first step towards victory is itself a
real…
The festival of Vijayadashami gives inspiration for
victory. On
this day, the
Hindu Deities
achieved the
great valour
of defeating
the ten
directions,
that is, the
enemies coming
from the ten
directions.
Hence, it is
also called
Dashahara
(Dasara), that
is, ten
directions. On
this day,
Mahishasur and
Ravan were
vanquished by
the
Trishul-wielding
Shri Durgadevi
and
Kodand-wielding
Prabhu Shriram
respectively.
Since the
Deities
defeated the
enemies with
the help of
weapons, the
Scriptures
tell us,
‘Shastramev
Jayate !’,
that is, ‘The
weapons only
win in wars’ Click here for more
