Just a post to say that anyone -- that is, anyone at all -- is welcome
to join the discussion group and participate in the discussions.

There are no restrictions, and you don't have to be introduced by a
current member. Don't be shy! Introductions are encouraged but not
necessary. Just join up, and participate!

Hello Everyone,

One of Anindya’s “shy” friends responding!!

The Mahabharata reading group sounded interesting, as I have never
read any book on the MB. I am one of those Indians who have learnt MB
from BR Chopra and grandma, getting dramatized or censored versions of
the original. So, please bear with me if I get overwhelmed / agitated
with the authentic stories (Nitish Bharadwaj is Lord Krishna right??)

I have started reading the translated version by Kisari Mohan Ganguly.
An online version of something so intense is hard to keep up with. I
am trying to get hold of R.K Narayan and Upendra Kishore
Roychowdhury’s Mahabharata. Wish me luck as I seem to be the most
ignorant.

Me: Born in Africa (Botswana), brought up in suburban Kolkata and
presently fighting my way through a PhD from Cambridge University.
Wish me luck on that one too!!

Hi Baishali,

Welcome! I think this group is shaping up nicely. I do agree the
Ganguli version is too intense. Makes you wish someone would put up
one of the other canonical English retellings online -- e.g. the
Kamala Subramaniam or R. K. Narayan versions. Of course there are
copyright issues, but -- as we agreed during our debate earlier -- we
Hindus need to do more to make it easier for people to read and
understand our texts!

As you might have seen in the other threads, we've decided to start
reading the Adi Parva and try to get to point where the Pandavas and
previous generations are born, as Anindya suggested. A loose goal is
to try to get there by the end of the month, posting any discussion
topics that we can think of along the way.

Cheers,
Rajeev.
