Hello,

Everytime I stand in front of Hans Magleby's old furniture shop on Main Street in Monroe, I think, "It would be a shame if this got torn down."
I sent a letter via snail-mail to the owner in Texas and have not received a response. I checked the tax records, and it appears that the shop and property are worth about $24,000.
I think it would be nice to restore the shop and make a small memorial Park next to it in memory of Hans and his family.
I just wanted to get a conversation going and hear your thoughts and ideas on the subject.
Additionally, Hans' son Orson's two-story mercantile store is next door. I contacted the owner of that building as well and he said he would be willing to sell that and the lot next to it for $79,000. (Orson is my great-grandfather).
Once restored, the buildings and park would need to somehow bring in revenue. So I'd also be interested to hear if anyone would have ideas on that front.
I appreciate any thoughts you are willing to share on the matter.

Sincerely,
Curt Magleby

I love it. This is exactly the kind of thing that American towns need. I am willing to contribute and participate.  Instead of trying to generate a profit, perhaps it could be donated to the city or owned by some sort of nonprofit group so that it wouldn't be generating a tax bill.

I've been touched by the response regarding Hans and Orson's shops. Sounds like many of us are on the same page. I was thinking we should focus first on Hans' shop because it is getting really run down. What would be the best way to raise funds for this? One thing I thought was establishing a Hans O. Magleby Foundation to facilitate purchasing and restoring the shop. Please let me know if you have any ideas.
I was surprised to hear that there is possibly Magleby family items still in the store. Does anyone know the owner or how to contact them?
There is also a Magleby descendent who lives in Monroe who is willing to help.
Thanks!!!

Good ideas!  $104,000 for starters seems like a decent price.  The restoration could be at least that much as well.  Kirk and I will definitely donate something towards the cause and be happy to do it.  We would need someone somewhat local to supervise, I would think.

Sincerely,

Hi All,

I spoke with the owner of the Hans Magleby store this morning. He said that he will not sell the property. He plans to retire there and build a two-story home on the property. I'm not sure if he plans on tearing down the store, but most likely. I told him to call me if he changes his mind and he said there is no way he will change his mind.
Thank you everyone for your help. Sorry I don't have better news.

Hi. I'm Linda Washburn and I live in Monroe. My husband is Danny Washburn. His grandmother was Hannah Magleby Washburn.

As I have read the recent emails I noticed the For Sale signs in front of the properties you are talking about. The real state company selling them is called Hometown Realty. The person you want to contact is Dave Coe. His number is 435-893-5011. I spoke with him today.

He said David Grow is the current owner of the store, house, and empty lot adjacent to the workshop. There is a current offer for the store and house for $120,000. It is in the works so if you want to get have a chance on that property you'd have to do it soon.

The empty lot is for sale but I don't think it has a current offer. The shop as far as Dave Coe knows is still owned by the person in Texas. He tried contacting him a couple of years ago and never got any response.

Dave and I walked over and looked at the properties. He even took me in the shop through the back door because it is open and not secure at all.  It's a little scary that anyone can walk in there. It looks like there are quite a few old things in there and there is also a boat with a motor and an old truck of some kind. Probably the property of the Texas owner.  Dave did mention that the roof has protected the shop and it is in better condition than the old store. He seems to think the old store would need a lot more work than the shop.

Dave is very interested in improving and beautifying Monroe Main Street. He would be very interested in helping you any way he can with obtaining these properties. He is currently in the process of renovating the Carol theater.

The person who owns the building is, Jeff sweet 619-435-5859. My brother Devin does not know the person. I would suggest that someone else contact him and negotiate a price.

That's great news! I was wondering if Devin happened to know the owner or have some way to contact him. We need to determine if he's willing to sell (or preferably donate) the property, before we can move forward. He could get tax deduction if he donates it to the Foundation.
Thanks for your response.

All,

We currently have around $9,000 in our Hans Olson Magleby Memorial Foundation Account. This may possibly be used in the purchase of the Monroe property. Excited about the privilege we have to do this in Monroe. My brother Devin Magleby, lives in Monroe, is the City Manager and could likely oversee this as well.

All,
There is some confusion about the Hans O store not being for sale. There are two stores discussed in this email chain: the Hans store and the Orson (Hans' son) store. Orson's store is a white, two-story mercantile shop just to the North of the smaller Hans' shop.

The Orson shop is for sale and I believe it is in the process of being sold right now to a Magleby descendant. Mr. Grow was the owner of the Orson store. Mr. Sweet, the owner of the Hans store, said he is not interested in selling.

Sorry for the confusion. Let me know if you have any questions.

Another thing to consider is the empty lot next to Hans' store. It is for sale and I thought that may make a nice memorial Park.

Hi everyone, I've been trying the contact the group for some time and haven't had any luck through the Google Group.

I'm Anna Lord, daughter of Geri Christensen who is Florence Maglebys daughter who is the daughter of Orson Magleby.
About a month ago I was searching for homes for sale and came across a home for sale in Monroe that I recognized as the home my grandmother grew up in that belonged Orson Magleby.  It sits adjacent to the old Magleby Mercantile on Center Street.
I quickly arranged to see the home and have since put on offer on both properties that have been accepted, this is the offer I believe Linda referenced in her email.

We have plans to restore both the home and the Mercantile.  Both properties are in poor condition, particularly the store.
We have met with both a structural engineer and a contractor from the area to see exactly how extensive the restoration projects will be.  As you can imagine, they are very extensive.  Despite that, we are still excited to take on this project and restore these historic properties that mean so much to our family.  Although we haven't finalized our plans as yet, we have an idea of what we are going to do with the Mercantile once it has been restored.

Timing is a funny thing.  It was after we had visited the properties and were putting together our offer that my mom received an email from this group regarding the Hans Olsen Magleby furniture store. It's wonderful that there is so much interest in making sure these old properties survive and are appreciated.  We hope to make that happen with the Orson Magleby home and store as well.

We plan to be down in Monroe either this week or next to look at the property again and would love the chance to talk with Darin about zoning ordinances and City requirements etc.  Darin would you be available?

As we begin this project/adventure, we would love to gather as many stories and photographs of these two properties as we can.  It will help us with the restoration, but we think it will also be wonderful to have those stories and pictures displayed in the properties as well.  Although I'm not a member of this group, I will try to send updates on the progress of these properties as we go. If anyone would be willing to share photos or stories, or would like to know more about what we are doing, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Or, maybe seek to have the Hans O. tradition preserved in the Dinwoody shop at the Historical Park in Salt Lake.  From the building in Monroe, we could use materials from the shop to build a small version of the shop on the plot next to the original site?

Just thoughts.

Just a thought, because all I have are thoughts and no money.  If the current owner is not interested in selling the furniture store, would he be willing to sell the building? Perhaps to be moved to the lot next door? When I was young, my friend's dad worked in moving houses and buildings. They have moved many historical buildings to sites around Utah.  For instance, This is the Place Historical State Park. He moved a lot of those buildings. There is a Dinwoody workshop there. Hans O. worked for them when he first came. It might give some ideas about restoring the building.

As I said, just a thought.

Could you please share the contact information for the person who owns the Hans O. Magleby shop? I'd like to contact him as well.  I imagine that a price could be found that would make him willing to sell.

I'm also glad that Ana Lord is buying Orson Magleby's shop.

All,

It is great news that a cousin is already in the process of purchasing and planning to restore the Orson Magleby properties. We can hope the owner of the Hans Magleby shop/store will change his view.

I am a bit worried about the status of the family foundation. A 501(c)(3) organization is required to submit a Form 990 every year and I think it must also have at least annual board meetings.
I do not know if that has been happening. My wife Linda helped and did much of the drafting of the paperwork to the IRS but after than neither she nor I have been in the loop on the foundation.
Before any plans are made to expend funds it will be important to be sure the foundation is in compliance. If there is a family member currently practicing law that would be willing to help with this it would be a good idea.

Cheers.

I'm so excited that you are buying Orson's home and store! My grandpa Horace is Orson's son and grew up in that home as well. I have some pictures on my Pinterest board that you could use.

I definitely can see the benefit of having the store in Salt Lake simply because it is difficult for many Hans descendants to travel to Monroe. I've made it out to Monroe only a few times myself.

Well Cousins…………..I hate to dampen the enthusiasm much here but if you look at the building closely it is constructed primarily of masonry (stone) and could certainly be relocated…………stone by stone as was the “London Bridge” in Lake Havasu Arizona from a location in England. Each stone was numbered, crated up, shipped, and reinstalled as a facing on the actual structural bridge over a portion of the Lake. Lots and Lots of dollarsJ!

I also have wondered, as has David, as to the current legal status of the H.O. Magleby Foundation. I am not aware of any efforts to maintain the legal status of the organization unless Kirk Magleby has done something on going from its inception.
