 Montana State Reference Network Update
August 2025
Improved and expanded network
Montana State Reference Network (MTSRN) subscribers want a network that is accurate, convenient and reliable to drive efficiencies in their work. At the Montana State Library, we work with subscribers and contributors to continually drive improvement to meet those expectations.
Improvements in the Bozeman area: Working from user feedback about an issue with station MTSU, the MTSRN Operator, Kazi Arifuzziman was able to determine that the station was not correctly using all of the available satellite constellations in the solutions it was providing. Kazi was able to then update the configuration of the MTSU station and make some changes to our server to ensure the network could handle the added computational load. We are hearing that users are seeing much better performance in the Bozeman area over the last couple of months.
Additionally, the network software was upgraded early in the summer and additional protection from ionospheric disturbance has been enabled which should improve the entire network.
Expanded access: Kazi recently added two MDT base stations to the MTSNR in southwest Montana (SWMT) near Lima (LIMA) and Philipsburg (PBRG). Another station will soon be functional near the Rocky Boys Reservation. Also planned is a new station at Fort Smith.
Our sensor map provides real-time status of all the stations operating on the MTSRN.

Visit us at MSU Field Days!
We have been invited to the Montana State University Summer Field Days to host a booth and share more information about the network. We would love to see you there! We visited Conrad and Havre in late June and Corvallis last week.

Contributors
The advancement of the MTSRN has been made possible by numerous contributors who host stations, demo our network to potential subscribers, promote the network through user testimonials, and educate our next generation on the use of MTSRN. We would like to thank all of them for their support of the MTSRN.
