I downloaded the Firefox plugin - beautiful! Then I foolishly started fiddling with the menus and options
within the FF viewer. I'm not sure how it happened but I
lost all the menu bars from inside the browser viewer. For
example, I can't save a file because I don't have the menu
bars or icons with which to do it.I uninstalled and reinstalled and the menu options from the
plugin within FF are gone and I can't get them back.I do have the menu options in the freestanding program but
not the one that opens from within FF. It seems I need to
replace the plugin but I've no idea how to do that.Help? Suggestions?Louise
I also lost the options tab at the bottom - that was the
beginning of the end.....I tried f11 and that opened up the FF window rather
completely but didn't give me any more options within the
window.Reset all settings seems to effect the standalone but it
doesn't seem to effect the plug in.The stand alone is fine. It's the FF plug in where
everything got wiped out. The same applies when I go to use
it in IE. Apparently both plug
ins were messed up. I can use it but I've lost a lot of its
best functionality.I can edit the registry - but I don't know what or where and
don't want to make more of a mess.LouiseLouise
"It's not about carelessness or anything, just that the
menus can be hidden (or shown) using the F8, F9 and F11 keys
- you might have tried to use one of these for a FireFox
function, but when our plugin is active it will "grab" this
key and execute the command - which is to hide some (F8
Toolbars, F9 Main menu) or all (F11) menus. In order to restore the menus, make sure you have a PDF
document opened in FireFox, then scroll a bit through it (to
ensure the focus is on the plugin), and then use the
function keys.
You could also try to use Edit -> Reset all settings to
default, once you see the main menu to restore the plugin to
it's factory settings.
Please note that the Viewer and the plugin could have
separate settings, as well as custom shortcut keys assigned :)"Louise
I did see Sumatra as a good alternative. It's good to know that someone I trust uses it. I don't have great confidence in using a disconnected or unsupported piece of software anymore. Trackers new software is much more than I need. Along with the limited maintenance period of updates, without registering it. Trackers viewer has been good to me, but I think I'll give Sumatra a try.
You can also set the browser to be the default app for opening your saved PDFs, which they can do offline too.
If you do that then no neeed for a seperate PDF viewer and so one less app to have installed.
For saved PDFs I tend to just use Adobe Reader DC.
Yes it can be a bit OTT just for viewing the odd PDF, but it does the job and I've never got round to evaluating the alternatives.
Perhaps if I viewed PDF's more often I'd spend the time to look at few different reader apps.
I just discovered a few days ago that browsers can open PDF'S. At this time, I just read PDF'S and don't do any creating or editing. Using a browser is definitely something to consider as a read only app.
What's the update process like? Meaning is it downloaded and updated or is it done manually by visiting the site and downloading then installing. My friend is not tech Savey at all, and this would matter to her.
For a long time, I have used PDF-Xchange Viewer to the PDF files of ebooks, papers, dissertations, etc. I prefer it rather than Adobe Reader. One of the reasons is because Xchange provides a JavaScript console, which can be invoked by hitting Ctrl+J. Thus, we can attempt to automate some annotations; for example, search and highlight words. You can find a source code from the knowledge base of Xchange. However, the original code can only find words that match exactly. Here, I modified the code in Line 10 and thereby it highlights words that contain the text to be searched.
One little problem is that you have to copy and paste the code to the JavaScript console, when you closed the viewer and open it again. It is inconvenient. One way to streamline it is to use a text expander, such as PhraseExpress, to create a shortcut/autotext to recall the script more easily and quickly. Thus, when I type the autotext (e.g. JS.h), then the all script is loaded to the console automatically.
NOTE: This program has mostly been replaced by PDF-XChange Editor (also portable), which is actively updated and contains additional features.

PDF-XChange Viewer is a feature-rich program that displays multiple PDF documents within a tabbed interface. Edit features include the ability to rotate documents, add comments/annotations to any PDF file, apply custom stamps from any image/PDF file/Windows clipboard, mark-up pages with text and objects, and type directly on any PDF page in "Typewriter" mode.
The program supports exporting to BMP/JPEG/TIFF/PNG etc., or extracting text from a PDF page/file. Additional features include capturing the document with the snapshot tool (copies an area to clipboard), measuring tools for distance, area and perimeter, and more. A recommended picture-to-text OCR plugin is available (thanks Bruce) as is a PDF help file.
Reported as functional on Mac/Linux under WINE. Alternatively, PDF-XChange Viewer Portable adjusts paths, with an OCR plugin and help file available from the website as separate downloads.

@zorro:
I updated my default PDF viewer (PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5.320) today. Tracker Software still updates the Viewer.
Why don't I use the PDF-XChange Editor? Simple, I need a PDF viewer, not an editor.
Sadly, V 2.5.317 seems to be the last version of this Viewer: "The PDF-XChange Viewer has been discontinued and replaced by the PDF-XChange Editor which is now available including all the features of the Viewer and much, much more. . ."
Yes, it was my mistake. I saw the OS-icons at the left side of the programs main webside and I didn't see one for WinXP. That's why I deleted it from 'System Requirements'.
But support of WinXP is mentioned at the webside ... so I corrected the TPFC entry.
Sorry, for caused trouble ;)
There is an available Portable Mode of PDF-XChange Editor (Editor is a new product and it's a substitute for Viewer). It is Free too and includes fantastic FREE kit of features. Also it added support of SharePoint - this is great deal, isn't?
Hi,
i'm very sorry, webfork, but i have missed your message...
Since a long time, I use of PDKtk for insertion/deletion/extraction. It's a must, I think, but I use PDF-XChange Viewer as reader : it's a very good software also for that, in particular for editing or for adding comments on pdf.
