I have a student who has some grant $ available to spend on R
training, but can't find information about upcoming workshops. Does
anyone know where to look? She is mainly interested in (a)
introduction to R and (b) training in multilevel modeling packages
(ideally nlme or lme4).

you might want to look at www.statistics.com for some very useful R courses. Also, revolutionR's website has some pertinent info.

There isn't a lot of organized R training.  There's one firm that spams the lists from time to time, but has no real connection to the R community and is thus highly suspect.  There is Revolution, as Nandi notes, and then there are conferences like useR and R/Finance and RMetrics Meilisalp.  Those all have 'tutorials' or 'seminars' available, but are primarily *conferences* with training added on for good measure.  I think Mango in Europe also offers R training, but that's about the limit of my knowledge.

As the author of the nlme and lme4 packages I give workshops like that
several times a year but usually in other locations (prophet without
honor and all that). Many years ago I offered such a workshop here
providing free admission to UW-Madison faculty, staff and students and
I would be willing to do so again. I'm not very good at organizing
such things. Denise Roder, our departmental administrator, organized
the last one. If those interested could set up a time and place,
preferably during a break in classes (and not in Spring Break as I
will be in Europe then) and arrange for publicity I will provide the
course materials and the instruction without charge.

In addition to the resources already mentioned ... UW SSCC offers workshops on "Introduction to R". I've never been, so I can't speak to their content/frequency/etc: http://www.ssc.wisc.edu/sscc_jsp/training/index.jsp

I would be happy to help organize/advertise a workshop on nlme and lme4.

Thanks, Kristin. Any idea how many potential attendees from ICTR? I can spread the word in Psychology and Education, where I think there will be some interest. Douglas, what format do you typically use for this type of workshop--1/2 day? Longer? Do you have a preference between a pre-spring date (e.g., before classes start in Jan) and post-spring (finals week or post-commencement in May)?

I'll just repeat my thanks for your willingness to offer this to the UW community. (My last message bounced from the listserve, but hopefully that problem is fixed.)

Thanks, Douglas and Kristin. I have co-workers who would be
interested in an introduction to R workshop. I would also be
interested in an nlme and lme4 workshop.

Doug: I would be an eager attendee, interested in nmle, intermediate
level scripts, and determining what gems reside in the packages
available to avoid reinventing the wheel (or script). I would expect
that PPD in Middleton and Covance on the east side would also have
interested statisticians and pharmacometricians that would seek a
seat.
