The Mad Hatter, Saturday, August 23, Warren, VT

Hat sign-in 9 to 10 am, teams selections from "the hats" at 10 am, and play begins 10:30 am.

Benefiting:  PEOPLE'S HEALTH AND WELLNESS CLINIC

As expected, PHWC is very excited that Mad River Disc will be hosting another Mad Hatter on Saturday, August 23 to raise funds for this local non-profit health care clinic in Barre, VT.  With cuts to Medicaid and other health care challenges on the horizon, we think everyone will agree that People's Health and Wellness Clinic will be needed more than ever in the months and years to come.  So join Mad River Disc for the 2025 Mad Hatter on the scenic Brooks Recreation Field in Warren, VT on Saturday, August 23, and help us raise some money for PHWC!

The Mad Hatter is an ultimate hat tournament open to any individual players (not teams) of all levels, from high school to senior citizens. Whether you've never played in an ultimate tournament or have extensive tournament experience, we'll do our best to make gender balanced, evenly matched teams. This tourney is a great first tourney for any new players and youth high school players wanting to learn the game better or to just have fun playing in a competitive ultimate tournament with older and more experienced players.  We hope to attract players from across Vermont and New England, so please pass this email along to others that may be interested.

The Mad Hatter Rule:

With a wide diversity of abilities on each team, to encourage fun and inclusivity on the playing field rather than win at all costs, we'll play with the Mad Hatter Rule:

  • An all-touch possession ending in a score can be counted as two points, if the defensive team acknowledges the all-touch score.  A contested all-touch score is just one point.

A spirit disc for each team:
Each team will get a Mad River disc to give away at the end of the tournament.  The recipient of the spirit disc, either on your own team or another team, is your team's choosing; perhaps most improved playing or best spirit-of-the-game.  Talk about it, have a vote, and let us know who won the spirit disc for your team and why.  If they're willing, we'd like to acknowledge them at the end of the tournament.

T-Shirts:  Four to six colors with bi-colored print in the color of the team you're drafted to, enough for 4 or 6 teams!

In order to maximize our benefit to People's Health and Wellness Clinic, we're hoping to have most players register for the tournament by August 15. Our goal is to have enough players for six teams or six different shirt colors, but it will be helpful to know our numbers before we order the printing of additional shirts on August 16. The more players we have, the more money goes to the People's Health and Wellness Clinic.

Afternoon BBQ:

Members of People's Health and Wellness Clinic will be grilling and selling veggie and beef burgers, sausages, chips, sodas, and water with proceeds benefiting PHWC!  So you can continue to help PHWC by purchasing some food near the end of the tournament!
