5th December - 11th December 2009.

Welcome to the 10th edition of the Madness Central weekly newsletter.

The big news this week continues to be the Madness UK Norton Folgate
Tour. Of particular buzz is the ever-changing set list including the
return of crowd favourites like "Bed and Breakfast Man" and "Johnny
The Horse". With nine concerts behind them (which included their first
matinee show since the 1980s), the excitement hasn't dwindled as the
remaining pre-Christmas dates fastly approach the much anticipated
London gig on the 18th.

===========================================================

This week's Special Offer for MCN Readers from Retro-Madness.co.uk

Owing to the unprecedented demand for the original black and white
enamel MIS Fan Club badges that we offered last week at the bargain
price of £4.99 inc UK p&p (the lowest price anyone has sold them at
for many years)...we will hold this price for one more week until
after the o2 Arena gig next weekend.

This week's offer follows a recent deal we have struck with Bert
Muirhead, author of the legendary Stiff Records book "The Story of a
Record Label" published in 1983 to sell a box of unsold books he has
recently uncovered. The 112 page book is basically the Stiff Records
bible. It has been out of print for many years and consequently is
very sought after. The cheapest one currently available on Amazon is
£44.50 plus postage! It details every Stiff release from Buy 1 to Buy
150 and Seez 1 to Seez 42, as well as promos, memorabilia and other
oddities. There is naturally plenty of stuff about Madness including
photos of various rare collectables and obscure items. The inside
pages are all in perfect condition but the covers do have some signs
of wear (afterall they've been sitting around since 1983!)The stock we
have is very limited, however, for this week only (or until they sell
out) we are able to offer them at less than 1/3 of the Amazon price at
£13.50 including UK postage!

Click the link below and you will find the books as the 4th item down.
The MIS enamel badges are approximately half way down the same page:

3. Pet Shop Boys "Christmas EP" and Autographed Poster Contest
reminder
===========================================================

The Pet Shop Boys Christmas EP Contest closes Monday, 14 December 2009
at 5 pm UK time.

We have a special Christmas treat for you this holiday season that's a
little off the nutty path. Kindly provided by the folks over at the
official Pet Shop Boys camp, you?ll have a chance to win a copy of the
forthcoming PSB EP simply titled "Christmas" for our second contest of
Madness Central's second year on the interweb.

What makes this so special to us Madness Fans? Included with this five
track EP is the Pet Shop Boys' fast-paced yet smooth arrangement of
the classic Madness love ballad "My Girl." If you'll recall, Suggs and
Carl joined Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe on stage at last year's
charity benefit, 'Can You Bear It', for the family of Chris and Neil's
former assistant and close friend, Dainton Connell, who was tragically
killed in a car accident.

4. Dailystar.co.uk: Interview with Suggs
===========================================================

Published date: 5th December 2009

SUGGS TRACES FAMILY TO FIND LOST FATHER

MADNESS frontman Suggs is tracing his family roots to find the father
he never knew.

The happy-go-lucky singer plans to end the family mystery when he
writes his autobiography next year.

He reveals: “The thing that defined my life is that I never met my
dad. My dad left when I was three years old.

“I dunno what happened to him, so I thought half of my book would be
an exploration about who I am as a man and as a father, in the context
of the fact that I never knew who my own dad was. And then finding out
who he was and where he went and what happened to him.”

Suggs celebrated the 30th anniversary of his band this year with an
acclaimed new album, The Liberty of Norton Folgate, and a sell-out
national tour.

The 48-year-old said: “Madness really put a lot of effort in this year
in a way that we hadn’t done for five, 10, 15 years. “We played at
Glastonbury, we closed down London’s Regent Street and people have
been kind enough to call our new album a masterpiece. Who am I to
argue with them? It’s a culmination of a really great year to do a
Christmas tour, our first proper British tour in a long while.”

Part of the band’s enduring popularity is their magnificent song
collection that includes hits such as My Girl, Our House and Baggy
Trousers. But the London lads feel sorry for young bands starting out
today.

Suggs said: “It’s all about The X Factor generation now. I feel a bit
sorry for those cats. Everything comes and goes so fast. You get some
new kid and then they’ve gone before you’ve even bought their record.

“When we started, we developed from playing the same residencies in
really dreary pubs. The landlord would sell more pints and invite us
back.

“Then, after a while, there’s a queue round the block and you’re
making your first record.

“Eventually you learn how to entertain an audience and to keep them.”

Madness have always had the gift of relating to the everyday man or
woman in the street, a quality too few contemporary songwriters have
been able to achieve.

Suggs added: “It should be about having fun.

“You see bands just stare at their shoes today and we don’t do that.

“We just go completely and utterly bonkers every night. And it’s a
great joy. It keeps me young, for sure.”

He went on: “Dizzee Rascal’s last album was a load of fun. It
resonated in some way for me. I think Lily Allen’s pretty good.

“But with Madness we don’t just play music, we entertain. It’s part of
our remit for ourselves. It’s amazing seeing young kids down the front
who have obviously seen our videos.

“We have some sort of affinity with young people, even though we are a
right bunch of old farts now.”

Madness are on tour until the new year. Their new album, The Liberty
Of Norton Folgate, is out now.

===========================================================
5. New Tiswas Collection features Madness song
===========================================================

After the infamous missing-eyelash-episode with Sally James on the 80s
TV programme Tiswas (which Madness was banned from after said
incident), it may be surprising to see they have been included on a 3
CD collection of Tiswas performances.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tiswas-Album-Various-Artists/dp/B002SR3SZW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1260310127&sr=1-1

Madness' contribution is Embarrassment; while most of the other tracks
from the collection are available as a digital download, Embarrassment
can only be had on the CD collection.

===========================================================
6. Absolute 80s Launches
===========================================================

Prepare to hear a lot more Madness on the airwaves. Absolute Radio has
launched their newest project, a station playing exclusively the best
from the 80s on the aptly named Absolute 80s.

http://absolute80s.com/

If you take a look through the playlist each day you'll be happy to
find Madness in is regular rotation. The first day we were aware of
the station on Madness Central, Madness had been played five times
that day with classics like Baggy Trousers, House of Fun and Our
House. The station is webcast so you can listen in wherever you are
worldwide... if you have an internet connection.

===========================================================
7. Full Record Collector interview with Madness Fan Chris Carter-Pegg
===========================================================

In the December issue of Record Collector magazine, Madness Central
Discography project manager (and arguably the most prolific collector
of Madness pressings, memorabilia and paraphernalia the world over)
Chris Carter-Pegg featured with an edited version of what was a very
lenghty interview. You can now read the full interview with Chris here
at Madness Central.

===========================================================
8. Happy Christmas from Woody's brother Nick
===========================================================

Most Madness fans know Nicky Woodgate best as the maestro behind the
Wonderful track "No Money." Seeing as Nick is so talented as to write
a song like "No Money", being one of the few artist sever who has
contributed to a Madness song (Clive Langer on "Coldest Day" and the
mysterious "West" on "I Pronounce You" being two rarified others), it
shouldn't surprise you that Nick is quite the prolific songwriter even
when he isn't collaborating with his drummer brother Woody.

Nick's been kind enough to share with us a song he wrote in 2002
called "Happy Christmas". Not exactly the holly jolly Christmas carol,
it's still an excellent tune perfect for the holiday season. You can
download the song here:

10. Swindon Concert Info: 07 December 2009
===========================================================

As the ever-changing set list for the tour is the buzz amongst fans,
there were some disappointed with the very rote choice of songs that
didn't include any big surprises like "Tarzan's Nuts" and "Hunchback
of Torriano" that previous gigs had enjoyed. Still, it's far from the
greatest hits packages in years past with songs like "Idiot Child"
being firm fan favourites.

Set List
------------------------------------------------------

1.One Step Beyond
2.Embarrassment
3.The Prince
4.NW5
5.My Girl
6.Dust Devil

Madness transform the Oasis into a night of ska lunacy
By Haley Court

IF there was one thing I could have wished for at last night’s Madness
gig at the Oasis, it would have been to be handed a pair of stilts on
the way in.

But even the lack of a clear view could not ruin what was a truly
fantastic performance for me and my fellow shorties at the back of the
venue.

Almost 3,000 fans packed the sweaty sports hall as the immortal words:
“Hey you, don’t watch that watch this! This is the heavy heavy monster
sound, the nuttiest sound around,” announced the start of the set.

The pop/ska gods – Graham “Suggs” McPherson, Daniel Woodgate, Mike
Barson, Lee Thompson, Chris Foreman, Mark Bedford and Carl Smyth gave
an energetic performance, akin to those older fans would remember from
when Madness burst onto the scene in Camden Town in 1976.

As they moved from Embarrassment to My Girl and House of Fun, Suggs
punctuated the show with brief comments to the audience, on fine form
as he stopped to charm Swindon’s younger fans at the front of the
throng before launching into their new single Forever Young.

As the gig continued the temperature began to rise and the smell of
sweat grew more prevalent, even Suggs could help but mention the venue
was a sports hall.

Madness fan Danny Kemp said the Oasis’ ability to attract bigger and
better names every year was more of a reason for Swindon to push ahead
with plans for a dedicated music venue.

“Here we are with the biggest British ska band here in Swindon and
frankly it is embarrassing we can’t put them up at a proper music
venue,” said the 25-year-old from Nythe.

“Don’t get me wrong, if it wasn’t for the Oasis we wouldn’t have such
big names coming here in the first place but I just think it is high
time we had something more like Bristol’s Beer Keller of Carling
Academy. Swindon deserves it.”

Friends Dave Kemp and Kelly Holmes agreed.

“The gig was spectacular but it was just too hot in there for me,”
said Kelly, 30, from Eldene.

“Madness are amazing but it would have been nice to see them in
Swindon’s purpose built music venue.”

Dave, 40, from Covingham added: “I think Swindon has the potential to
attract even more top names, but we’ll need our own music venue to get
them.”

As Madness launched into chart hits House of Fun and Baggy Trousers
the fez’s went flying and beer glasses were held high proving the band
truly were, One Step Beyond.

Leeds O2 Academy: Madness review
By Duncan Seaman

It's 25 years since Madness last played in Leeds – and how this city
had missed them. From Carl Smyth's familiar "Hey you, don't watch that,
watch this" introduction to One Step Beyond to the closing notes of
Night Boat to Cairo every hit was greeted with dancing and a mass
singalong.

A smartly besuited and be-titfered Suggs was in genial form,
reminiscing about his first songs with pianist Mike Barson 30 years
ago ("I've only just got out of Mike Barson's bedroom") and a show at
the Leeds venue Tiffanys in 1979, after which someone broke the
windows in the band's bus ("It was a breezy trip home").

He even dedicated a cover version of the ska tune Chase The Devil to
Dave Beer, "Lord Beero", founder of city club night Back2Basics which
is celebrating its 18th birthday.

A packed-to-the-rafters house full of forty- and fiftysomethings
lapped up anthems such as My Girl and The Sun and The Rain.

Over and over again you could appreciate Nutty Boys' rare, Beatles-
like ability to write to write songs that connect with people's
everyday lives.

There was a mid-set lull, when the band opted to play tracks from
their latest album The Liberty of Norton Folgate and the oldies In The
Rain and Ernie, but the tempo and mood lifted considerably with House
of Fun.

From there it was a straight run through their top 10 smashes, with
the audience in particularly strong voice for It Must Be Love and the
"alleluias" of Wings of a Dove.

A Madness gig really is communal experience. Let's hope they don't
leave it so long before we see them in Leeds again.

Review: Madness, Leeds Academy

WE ARRIVED with mixed feelings, for while we were familiar with the
Madness classics, neither of us had experienced the new material off
The Liberty Of Norton Folgate in any depth.

The rest of the crowd didn’t seem to share our feelings as there was a
real sense of anticipation and excitement at the chance to hear the
old and the new from the first Madness studio album in ten years.

The Camden band were greeted in true Yorkshire style by the buoyant
crowd and reciprocated the welcome by breaking into the classic hit
One Step Beyond.

Suggs was quick to slip back into the old routine by working the crowd
just like he did 20-something years ago.

He even bravely went solo when briefly covering The Beatles’ Help.

This led nicely into newer material such as their recent single NW5,
which was very well received.

The band then continued on a plateau by performing new songs such as
Idiot Child before bringing the crowd back to life with their version
of Out Of Space, originally by The Prodigy.

They picked up the pace still more with a lively finale featuring some
of their greatest hits such as Baggy Trousers and Our House.

They finished in true Madness style by encouraging a room full of
burly men to sing It Must Be Love. All in all they produced a solid
performance that suggested they may well be back.

The Brum concert can be summed up in this one very simple phrasing:
The Return of "Johnny The Horse." Not played live since the Forest

Baggy Trousers hold up well

02 Academy, Birmingham

Madness, madness, they call it madness, but for all the fans of the
original Nutty Boys it was a night of sheer joy.

From the opening stomp of One Step Beyond to the closing Night Boat to
Cairo, last night was an unforgettable journey through three decades
of classic sounds.

Birmingham’s O2 Academy was the venue for the first of the band’s two
gigs in the region in just a week – they play Wolverhampton Civic on
Thursday.Suggs is a timeless icon who joked that after 30 years
together Madness can still boast all their own teeth. Judging from
last night’s show-stopping frenzy they are destined to remain, in the
words of their fresh material, Forever Young. It was a dizzy journey
through favourites such as Bed and Breakfast Man and Our House which
still sound as fresh as a daisy.

Suggs paid tribute to Madness fans young and old as he enjoyed a warm
rapport with the crowd and whipped them well and truly into a frenzy
with the likes of Wings of a Dove, House of Fun and Baggy Trousers.

Just before the encore he gave fans an early Christmas present – the
anthemic It Must Be Love.

Needless to say the final call to the Fez-hatted crowd to hop onboard
the Night Boat To Cairo resulted in absolute bedlam.

Madness, I call it gladness. Wolverhampton, you are in for a treat.

By Maria Cusine.
