2. Ben Sherman gig at The Flower Pot: Reviews, Set List and YouTube Clips.

Gig Review: The Sun: Music Biz
Source: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/music/2962240/Caught-Live-Madness-play-a-secret-show-in-Camden.html

You know a gig is special when one of Britain's most celebrated bands have to push past you just to take the stage. And on Wednesday night, MADNESS played a secret concert that was so intimate it may well have been in SUGGS' front room.

Packing out Camden's Flowerpot pub with friends, family, former flatmates and even a few fans, the Nutty Boys played a truly special show. Within touching distance - especially when using the bar as a second stage - the band enjoyed the gig just as much as the audience.

Suggs was on top form musing on everything from football to politics, giving the searing insight: "We're on the eve of the general election and you know what... we're f***ed." Launching a new range of clothing, he wasn't above the odd cheap plug either - changing the lyrics on I Chase the Devil to "I'm gonna put on a Ben Sherman shirt, and chase Satan out of Earth".

All the hits were there, new and old, as they rattled through tracks including One Step Beyond, The Prince, NW5, Loafer, Baggy Trousers, House Of Fun and, of course, Madness. For the finale, Suggs draped a towel over himself as the lads performed a supercharged Night Boat To Cairo. Then they simply strode off the stage, back through the crowd and out the door. It was quite a night.

WITH Suggs leading, Madness pushed through the crowd on to the tiny stage to a hero’s welcome. Then with the immortal battle cry, “One step beyond”, the venue sprung into action.

This secret gig to launch the Madness range of Ben Sherman gear had the potential to be a bit commercial. But as the long-standing ska outfit frog-marched through hits Embarrassment, NW5 and My Girl, any whiff of PR was trumped by a relentless energy that had the fans in a nostalgic frenzy.

House Of Fun and Baggy Trousers got an airing. And It Must Be Love still holds its own as one of the most perfect pop songs ever written. As Suggs and the lads swaggered off to Night Boat To Cairo, they proves that they might be older but the music is still up there, merrily blowing its own trumpet.

They call it Madness – we call them one of Britain’s best bands ever.

Set List:
One Step Beyond, Embarrassment, The Prince, NW5, My Girl, Dust Devil, The Sun & The Rain, Ironshirt, That Close, Bed & Breakfast Man, Forever Young, House of Fun, Baggy Trousers ,Our House, It Must Be Love, Madness, Night Boat to Cairo

3. Madness Plays "Office Party" Gig in Cardiff

Original Source:

For most South Wales workers they are an opportunity for a couple of free drinks and to exchange some office gossip... but not staff at Admiral. Instead of putting a few pounds behind the bar for the office party, the Cardiff-based car insurance firm treated its 2,300 staff members to a free concert featuring 1980s band Madness.

Workers were only told of the surprise performance through a series of cryptic clues in the lead-up to the party, which was a thank-you from the company for all the hard work they had put in over the past two years.

The Cardiff International Arena was booked as the venue for the party and was transformed into a glitzy, Hollywood style affair, with a casino, Willy Wonka world and dodgems. For 42-year-old Mark Page, the best part of the night was the performance of his favourite band.

He said: “I’m 42 now so I grew up with Madness, and here was my chance to see them perform.”

Mark, who works at Admiral’s IT department, has been with the company for 15 years and has been to many of the company’s parties. He added: “Every year they get bigger and better. This year I even won a trip to the party in a pink Hummer limo.

“The communications team here are really good. They sent out teaser e-mails with anagrams and clues as to who was going to be there.”

Hannah Bending has worked for Admiral for three years and explained that the way the company treated its staff made people enjoy their work even more. She said: “I love working here; I don’t think I’ll ever leave. We dressed up in Hollywood glam, floor-length dresses, and the men dressed smarter than they usually do. Madness were fantastic, really energetic. We were right down the front dancing. I’d like to have Take That next time.”

One of those who dressed up for the occasion was 21-year-old Joe Pearce, who turned up in an Oompa-Loompa’s costume. He said: “It was an amazing night. There was the Ghostbusters car there and lucky for us the Willy Wonka section. I wish I could remember more than I can though.”

Organiser James Carnduff said: “We throw a big party for staff every two years and it’s the highlight of the Admiral social calendar.m“Staff make a real effort and the buzz around the office in the weeks leading up to the party is fantastic. Madness were tremendous, a real party band. The challenge now is to be able to top this with the next party.”

4. SOS 4.8 Festival Review - Murica, Spain

Original Source: NME: http://www.nme.com/news/franz-ferdinand/50925

Franz Ferdinand, Madness and The Horrors were among the acts to play Spain's SOS 4.8 festival this weekend (April 30-May 2).

The 48-hour non-stop festival saw crowds of up to 35,000 pack out Murcia's Auditorio y Centro de Congresos, despite heavy rain falling on the second day (May 1) which forced acts including Mystery Jets, Orbital and Fatboy Slim to take to the stage later than expected.

Franz Ferdinand used their headline appearance on Friday night to cap off a successful world tour of their latest album ‘Tonight: Franz Ferdinand’. Frontman Alex Kapranos told NME.COM that the gig had a celebratory feeling for the band, who now head to Portugal to play their final show of the tour before starting work on new material.

"These are the last gigs of this album, and Spanish crowds are always brilliant so it's been a fun one to do for us," Kapranos explained after the gig, before adding that to him the festival has a "similar atmosphere to what Benicassim was like four or five years ago".

The Scottish band played a greatest hits set, with tracks aired including 'Take Me Out', 'Darts Of Pleasure' and recent single 'No You Girls'. Kapranos, wearing a suit and conversing with the audience in Spanish throughout the set, interacted between most songs and also praised those in the crowd who had brought along self-made placards bearing the band's name.

Meanwhile, The Horrors also took to SOS 4.8's main stage on Friday, performing a set that leant heavily on their latest album ‘Primary Colours’, though non-album track ‘Whole New Way’ also got played towards the end. The London band said little throughout the gig, though they looked relaxed and wore shades and lighter colours rather than their normal black attire.

On the festival's second stage, Crystal Castles showcased their new self-titled (2010) album to a heaving audience, many of whom already knew the words to the likes of 'Celestica' and 'Doe Deer'. Although frontwoman Alice Glass was more restrained than at some of the band's more notable shows, she still managed to annoy festival security by refusing to stop shining her flashlight in their faces, and also played dead on stage and wrapped herself in the microphone cord during an intense version of 'Alice Practise'.

Hot Chip played a hit-friendly set on the Friday night, watched by members of Franz Ferdinand and Mystery Jets. The band, led by Alexis Taylor, threw in their cover of Shakira's 'She Wolf' before playing a lively version of 'Over And Over' that garnered a massive singalong from the main stage audience.

The second day of SOS 4.8 (May 1) got off to a shaky start after a heavy thunderstorm - lasting roughly an hour - caused such a deluge that some roads in the centre of Murcia had to be closed due to flooding. Parts of the concrete festival site also had to be drained of excess water, forcing most of the acts to delay their appearances, which were due to kick off at 6pm.  Coming onstage an hour later than scheduled at roughly 10pm, Mystery Jets previewed their new album 'Serotonin', kicking off their set by playing new song 'Flash A Hungry Smile'. The band also played old favourites including 'Young Love', 'Half In Love With Elizabeth' and 'Two Doors Down'. Bassist Kai Fish was the most vocal of the band in terms of audience interaction, gesturing to the crowd throughout and attempting to speak in cod-Spanish at several points.

Madness also took to the stage later than planned but played a greatest hits set to a huge main stage crowd, putting in a typically audacious performance that saw several members climb up the lighting rigging, though frontman Suggs was content with simply strolling around the stage wearing a suit and shades. Tracks including 'It Must Be Love', 'Our House', 'My Girl' and 'Baggy Trousers' drew mass singalongs from the huge Murcia crowd, and the band reflected the adoration by playing a Spanish-tinged intro to their
cover of Max Romeo's reggae standard 'Chase The Devil'. They ended their set with a extra-long version of 'Night Boat To Cairo', taken from their 1979 debut album 'One Step Beyond'.
