Cleaning up after a stain on your oriental rug can be very tricky, but
if done right can look great. Remember, your oriental rug is an
investment, so you should treat it as such, with care.

Step 1: Time is against you

If treated immediately after the stain has occurred, the majority of
the stain can be removed. 99% of all oriental rug stains can be
removed if treated immediately.

Step 2: Removing the material

Use a spoon to try and remove any semi-solid substances from the rug.
Never scrub the fibers, as you will force the stain deeper into the
rug. Never use a knife or blade to remove the contents of the stain.
This will only damage the fibers of the rug and devalue your
investment.

Step 3: Use a White Towel or White Paper Towel

Blot at the stain carefully. Beware of using colored paper towels or
napkins on a stain, as the color may bleed into the rug. Never scrub
or brush in the stain into the rug fibers. Re-wet the stain with water
to absorb more of the stain. Do not soak the entire rug; only enough
water to wet the effected area. Repeat this step until you have
removed as much of the stain as possible.

Step 4: Spot Remover (Optional)

If you use a spot remover test it before using it. Some commercial
spot removers will cause the rug dyes to bleed or even remove the
colors of the rug, ruining your rug.

Step 5: Call an Expert

Once you have treated the stain immediately you are now able to clean
you Oriental rug. I would always recommend calling an expert to clean
your rug if you have one nearby. Oriental Rug experts have the
knowledge and experience to clean almost any type of rug.
