
Malappuram: Ma’din Academia for Research and International Studies (MARIS), the research entity under Kerala based Ma’din Academy, in collaboration with other agencies has decided to organize a three day international seminar on William Logan (1841–1914), the British magistrate and collector to Malabar, from 3rd to 5th April 2014 at Calicut and Malappuram. Various aspects of ‘Land Systems and Agrarian Relations in 19th and 20th Centuries in Asia’ will be discussed.
Malappuram and Kozhikkode district administrations, International Islamic University Malaysia, Calicut University, Malabar Institute for Research and Development and other agencies for socio economic research are collaborating in this event. The seminar, which is the first attempt in this direction propose to discuss the agrarian relations and nationalism during the 19th 20th centuries. It is also propose to recollect the contributions made by William Logan to the land reforms in Kerala. His major stress was to give fixity to the tenure, to the peasants who were working in the soil.
His tenancy commission report of 1881 emphasizes this aspect of tenancy reforms. The seminar also will discuss multi subjects like peasants nationalism, agrarian struggles, changes in land tenures, tribals and land system etc. There shall be special sessions on 1857 revolt of India, Santal rebellion, Teiping rebellion, Malabar rebellion and Long March of China.
‘19th and 20th centuries are very important in the history of Asia mainly due to the European intervention particularly in India and South East Asia. There had been several peasant revolts against the British during this period. All such revolts and agrarian movements have been responsible to promote peasant consciousness and nationalism in Asia’ – said Dr. K.K.N Kurup, the coordinator of the seminar.
The organizing committee will arrange a seminar at Edinborough University where William Logan completed his graduation. Along with the seminar, there would be study tours to the places of Malabar rebellion, publication of the book on William Logan and also the launching of special web portal on Malabar.
‘There would be various post sections in various universities followed by the visit to the several places of peasantry rebellion. The seminar will also focus on the development and changes among the weaker sections of the society who fought against the colonial rule’- Sayyid Ibrahimul Khaleelul Bukhari, chairman of Ma’din Academy.
A committee has been organized for this purpose as Sayyid Ibrahimul Khaleelul Bukahi, chairman of Ma'din Academy as executive director and Dr. K.K.N Kurup, former vice chancellor of Calicut University as the coordinator.
