Dear MWM friends and fans,

Earth Day (April 22nd) gives us a chance to reflect on how we are
using our resources, both on a personal and a community level. When I
started Made With Molecules I realized that I could run the business
in accordance with my personal ideals. I keep striving to make MWM as
human- and Earth-friendly as possible, by using recycled materials,
local sources, and giving back through donations. Each month for the
last year and a half, MWM has donated a portion of proceeds to
environmental protection and science education organizations. This
month's donation will go to the Surfrider Foundation, a grassroots
organization that puts people who love the oceans and beaches to work
caring for these places. Other donations have been made to Jane
Goodall's Root and Shoots, the Chez Panisse Foundation, the Coral Reef
Alliance, Heifer International, and the Earth Island Institute, among
others. I am always happy to hear suggestions from you for these
donations. I especially value local and grassroots organizations.

I'm afraid I have no new molecule jewelry to report. The last few
months have been busy. I hope to have some new items to share soon!

In February, I traveled to Belize to learn about cacao and making
chocolate. I had an amazing time and thoroughly recommend Cotton Tree
Lodge in the jungle of southern Belize, where Mayans tend cacao trees
and tourists are rare. I'm so inspired about what I learned about
chocolate, hopefully you will see some of that in my future work. I
did get a nice photo of the theobromine necklace on a cacao pod. Wow,
that fruit is gorgeous!

In March I visited the Big Island of Hawaii. I'm a few steps closer to
moving there to carve out a more sustainable existence, oh, and to
enjoy warn ocean water. I love Hawaii and the Big Island especially
impresses me because of the rawness of Nature there. Seeing lava
creating land was one of the most awe-inspiring experiences of my
life. The contrast of the volcano's destructive power to its life-
nurturing power, as evidenced by the lush jungle growing on and around
it, gives me chills.

This month I visited Ohio-Wesleyan University to talk to students
about my career transition. I was so encouraged to meet such smart,
mature, interested students. They didn't all know what they want to do
when they graduate, but they were all fully engaged in the world. Very
impressive. I hope some of the wisdom I've gained through my
experiences can help them find their own paths. And, woah, I can't
believe fifteen years have passed since I was in their place!

3. Science Tarot FaceBook fan page

After more than 5 years in the works, our science communication
project Science Tarot is scheduled to be finished and published this
year. (More about the launch party in the next newsletter.) We have
taken the traditional meaning of each of the 78 tarot cards and
matched it to a scientific concept. The five amazing artists on our
team are making these concepts come to life. Join our FaceBook fan
page to see a sneak-preview of the cards! We are posting the image an
explanation of a different card each week.

4. upcoming event: SkeptiCal in Berkeley, CA on March 24

This Friday I'll be at the SkeptiCal Conference. Come meet me and

5. upcoming event: Maker Faire in San Mateo, CA on May 22&23

If you are anywhere near the Bay Area on May 22nd or 23rd, you must
check out the Maker Faire. It's the State Fair of our DIY age and
packed to the gills with everything from fire sculpture to robots to
light-up textiles to furniture to molecule jewelry. I'll set up a
table for Made With Molecules and enjoy the surrounding creative
chaos. Science Tarot will be there, too.

6. MWM in the press: MAKE Magazine issue 22

Thank you to the folks at MAKE Magazine for a very nice little
feature. You can see it here:

7. molecule jewelry on TV

Thank you to Angela and the other hawk-eyed folks who discovered that
a contestant on the TV show America's Next Top Model often wore either
a theobromine or a dopamine MWM necklace. Tatianna is a science major
turned model. I enjoyed watching the show until she was eliminated
last week. So sad. Whether she sticks with modeling or goes back to
science, hopefully she will continue to make science a bit more hip.

I hope you all are enjoying the spring (or autumn)! Happy Earth Day!
