Also, I had the fun experience of hand-pollinating a vanilla vine in our yard. Far from boring, vanilla is actually quite a diva, an orchid requiring hand-pollination of flowers that are open less than a day, 9 months for the fruit to mature, and a labor-intensive few months long curing process. I"m in it for the long haul, though, and I look forward to making my own vanilla extract in about a year. Here's a fun picture of the vanillin necklace with a vanilla orchid flower:
