Dear Made With Molecules friends and fans,
I have Summer Solstice on my mind. You may recall from last year that
I am fond of the idea of celebrating the summer solstice as a science-
appreciation (and nature-appreciation) holiday. I'm currently dreaming
up activities that encourage people to look at the world from a
viewpoint of curiosity and wonder, which I will test out on my friends
this Sunday. I'll let you know how it goes. On the list so far:
singing science-themed songs and reciting science-based poems around a
campfire, taking slow nature wanders with identification books in
hand, swapping of science factinis, and building Andy Goldsworthy-like
art using natural objects in their environment. Oh, and we will
certainly appreciate the handiwork of our fermenting microbe-friends.
I'd love to hear your ideas! Please leave comments with Science
Solstice celebration suggestions here:

5. giving back
With the sweet and tangy summer fruit now at the local Farmer’s
Market, my thoughts turn to local food. With this in mind, June’s
donation will be to the Chez Panisse Foundation, which instills a
respect for food and the environment in school children through
teaching them to grow and enjoy garden foods.

Last month's donation went to 'Imiloa Astronomy Center, which teaches
kids & adults about nature through astronomy and Hawaiian culture.

July's donation will go to the Earth Island Institute, a Berkeley-
based organization that promotes grass-roots projects to conserve,
preserve, and restore ecosystems important to people.

7. upcoming event: Fire Arts Festival, Oakland- Friday July 17
The Crucible, an Oakland-based school of metal, glass, electronic, and
so many other old and new arts, is once again organizing its amazing
Fire Arts Festival. I'll have a table there on Friday July 17. Come by
and say "hi!"

Enjoy the Solstice! I hope you are able to take time to remind
yourself how amazing it is to be alive on this Earth. At least take a
half-hour to stare up at the clouds and think about the Universe
beyond.
