Dear Greene County Artists/Crafters -

I am writing today on behalf of Traditional Arts Indiana, an organization at Indiana University.

AsIndiana’s official folk arts program, Traditional Arts Indiana (TAI) works to document and promote community artists around the state. One of the ways TAI connects with community is by conducting survey fieldwork. Currently, we are seeking to document the work of retired and elder artisans, crafters, and artists in 11 southern Indiana counties.

In Greene County, we are hoping to meet and interview elder residents who are known in their community for bearing traditional knowledge, crafting, or creating art. Traditional Arts Indiana views art as creativity in everyday life – from how people extract limestone from a hillside to how they bake family recipes. This could include anyone - from musicians who perform at local events to people who make lawn sculptures - and any practice - from the restoration of old farm equipment to the creation of memory quilts.

It is our goal to record interviews and take photos, which will be saved in one of IU’s archives for educational purposes. In addition, the information may be used for future programming, such as a Traditional Arts and Aging Activity Guide.

If you are interested in being interviewed for this project, know someone who might be, or have any questions at all, please contact Lydia:
