The Heaton Peer Group is now the Conscious Dancing Peer Group

Hi dancers!

 

Great news! Yesterday night, we've decided to rename the Heaton Peer Group to 'Conscious Dancing Peer Group.'

 

The group will continue the long-standing tradition of offering affordable conscious dance from dancers for dancers.

The group caters to a wide range of music styles and artistic expressions that will keep you on your dancing toes! 

 

The peer group sessions are every Wednesday, 19:15-21:00.

 

Heaton Community Centre
Trewhitt Road, Heaton
Newcastle upon Tyne
NE6 5DY

 

It is £5 or whatever you can afford. If in doubt, just come along and have a dance!

 

The peer group is a not-for-profit community group; any proceeds after rent and expenses go to the Sponsorship Fund of the Newcastle Dance Collective and serve to give bursaries to dancers going to workshops of accredited teachers. The group is run by 5-7 volunteers. Nominal primary contact is Joe Sallis (in CC).

That is interesting. What does this mean with regards to 5 Rythms as the basis of the dance. 

 As its not mentioned in the email so thought I'd ask.

Hi Everyone,

The name was changed because Thomas said that the 5 Rhythms organisation is active in closing down local peer groups who use their 5 Rhythms brand. Conscious Dancing Peer Group is just one name that came up and a group of us who were there agreed to this. We can change it to anything else if anyone feels strongly towards it.

I think that we are still going forward with the Wave pattern to the dance.

to be transparent, there were specific claims made around the trademarks held by Jonathan Horan (Gabrielle's son) and in consultation with 5Rhythms Global.

I was told that it is grounds for a challenge when money changes hands. While the peer group is not-for-profit, money does change hands.

There was a past attempt shut down the peer group in form of a firmly worded letter; more recently, there have been discussions around the subject with renewed zeal.

 

In our discussion in the group yesterday, we felt it safest to remove any reference to trademarks.

In any case, we are not claiming endorsment or sponsorship by any trademark-bearing organisation out there, never have.

 

On your question of the basis of the dance:

As I understand it, nobody can constrain what form of conscious dancing modality you use when putting together a set of music.

As I understand our discussion yesterday, as a group, we will not prescribe a particular form or modality, as long as it is conducive to dancing consciously.

Of course, the peer group has been going for about 30 years now and, from our side, there is no intention to change its traditions and foundations of the dance.
