Peeked on my bees stores today from the top.  One hive is doing very well and bringing in lots more pollen than the others.  My set up is one deep, one med, then a shim with sugar on top.  This strong hive has started in on the sugar but then filled in the available space with burr comb.  Do they need a different set up?  It's super early but should I get in there tomorrow and reconfigure or just know I'll have lots of burr comb to deal with in 3-4 weeks?
These are the kind of calls I'm still trying to figure out even after years of this.
thanks for any thoughts, Annali

The configuration is just fine. Personally I would not change anything to another month.

I am having the similar action in my hive when i looked at them.
When is everyone planning on switching to syrup feeders?
Anyone take any of their insulation/wraps off the hives yet?

Thank you

This is the worst time to remove the insulation.
I keep mine until May.
Just as we have warm days in February, winter still can return even in May.
Right? :)

As for the emergency feed - dry sugar stays on.

I removed my light weight side wrap but left the insulation on the top. I did this because my hive had tilted over the winter and was leaning backwards. Any excess moisture on the landing (melting snow) ran into the hive and caused the dead bees on the bottom to become packed and moldy. Corners were pulling apart and I clamped frame until it dried out.  We scraped dead wet and moldy bees from the bottom last warm day and tilted the hive slightly forward again. My bees are fairly active and have brought in a lot of pollen the last two days. At least 20 bees a minute are pretty loaded. They were in the bird feeder the previous week with corn pollen but last week silver and red maples are flowering. I have a swamp area within a mile but have not ventured down there yet to see what might be pollinating. Only the crocus are flowing in my gardens at this time. It is cool watching the flies try to get into the hive and the bees having none of that.
Still have bee candy left from over-winter, but put a couple more on top when I had it open last warm day as well.

Thank you all!  I'll cool my jets and leave them be. :)  It's fun to see all the pollen coming in today
