Apparently more of us are going to have to worry about bears. In the last week there've been sightings in the Sauk area, in Middleton by lake Mendota, and this morning in Cross Plains.

Bears have been in those areas on and off for 6-7 years now that I know of. From what I understand it is young males/females extending their range to the south. We have customers drop in who show trail cam photos and the occasional frame with a paw print on it from those areas. They haven't been significantly destructive, meaning that they aren't hitting every apiary in the area and aren't destroying stuff frequently but when they do it has been significant to total destruction. I suspect as they get into the urban areas around Madison they will gravitate toward bird feeders as easy targets and eventually, as they get bold and not too leary of people, garbage dumpsters. They probably travel south following along the Wisconsin River corridor and up/down the tributaries to it which lands them in those areas more frequently. A little further to the north between Lodi and Poynette, Randolph and Montello this spring there were apiaries damaged by bears and north of there around Princeton..

It is a current story - as we speak, NOT 2021.
I simply bumped the old topic up as it fits.

See on the Nextdoor for yourself - now.
As of 4-5 hours ago
--------------------------------------

The bear is still in the Meadowood neighborhood. Just chilling in a tree for now.

Three police cars (one unmarked) and TV-15 at Manor Green and Kroncke Drive in Madison WI.
Owner of bear tree says his neighbor next door has bees (honey!) and chickens (which he has brought inside)!
Wonder if this is the bear from Mt. Horeb. A good size creature. Not a cub. Drawing an appreciative crowd.
May be in YOUR backyard tonight.
