How would I find out whether the rusty patch bumble bee has been found at Maury Airfield in Middleton?
Does anyone here know whether it has or not.

I heard it has been found at Pope Farm Conservancy.

Thanks.

There are a number of apps, with one of the most popular being “iNaturalist”. I you have a smartphone you can download and use the app. Citizen scientists use the app in the field to record observations of species all over the planet, and then scientist use the data to track those species. This data only reflects the observations of people who use the app, and who have taken time to enter their observations.

They also have a website that you can create an account on, and view the data people have collected. <https://www.inaturalist.org>

Here is the current observations of Rusty-patched bumble bees for southern Wisconsin:

Here are the observations from Middleton (airport is in the upper left):

I seem to recall seeing bumble bees with a spot of orange in my yard; I will look a lot more closely next season; I didn't know they were endangered.

Are there common look-alikes?

There are several bumblebees in Wisconsin with orange/ red on them. Including the tri-colored bumblebee, red-belted bumblebee, and brown belted bumble bee.
Here is a good resource: https://wisconsinbumblebees.entomology.wisc.edu/online-guide/species/   The rusty patched bumblebee is listed under it's latin name on the site: bombus affinis
Happy bee finding!

You can also look at the Bumble Bee Brigade website, but it doesn't zoom in all the way. With endangered species, it's standard practice to buffer the locations.

Hey Betsy,

I photographed one several years ago in Fitchburg.  I was pretty sure, but the ID was also confirmed for me by a contact at the UW Arboretum.

They are not difficult to ID if you have a good photo.

Regards,

Joe

Thanks, Joe.
I am looking for endangered species that might be found on the Morey Airfield.

July, when bumblebee populations are highest, get some folks together for a little "citizen science" in the area.  If there are any in the area, they can be found.

Unfortunately, the odds of someone having observed them at random in the area is quite low.   The odds of finding some on purpose is much higher.

If the Morey Airfield lets you bring in a group of people to stroll over the property, in July, looking for bees, add me to your list!

Have you contacted the Xerces Society locally?  Aren't they the insect club?

Back when I was teaching beekeeping classes, I asked the Xerces Society to announce them to their membership.  Sadly, I no longer have my list of contacts.  I did an internet search just now and came up with little of value.  This page provides some emails of individuals, who may know more.
