Viruses and viral loads started getting a lot more attention after 2006 due to research on CCD (colony collapse disorder). Among others, the USDA’s National Honey Bee Disease Survey initiated in 2009 provided for standardized testing, data collection, and
reporting that has significantly increased the awareness of the role that viruses play in Varroa-induced colony losses.
New viruses or variants are sometimes identified that seem to correlate with waves of higher winter mortality some years. So far I'm only hearing speculation about this winter's high commercial losses so it will be interesting to hear what the research, including virus testing, suggests.
