Both articles were quite interesting. Reading through the
“Enlightenment Origins” really reminded me how much history print has
and what a process the development of print has been. There are so
much technical details we take advantage of or look over because of
the technology we have today. Its just amazing how much has gone into
what is so standard now.
As for “The Crystal Goblet” by Beatrice Ward it really fascinated me,
she made a good point with her use of metaphor. I agree with her to my
understanding of the article of how simple is better. Simple in the
sense of the idea or thought being the main importance just as wine
and its qualities would be. I agree it is important to not let too
much fancy type work get in the way of the thought. Beatrice says “I
can make arbitrary sounds which will lead to a total stranger to think
my own thought.” , This line just really caught my eye because in
advertising that is exactly what I will strive to do and to me its
just such an exciting idea to be able to reach people with one
headline and share that thought.

Hi Rose!

Yes, I think that it is interesting how you liken "The Crystal Goblet"
to advertising. Ever look at an ad and think, "Oh, gee, that looks
awful"? I'm guessing it's because the typography is way too
outrageous. It seems to me that ads that are more simple catch our
eyes more. Sometimes just one word is all you need. It's like the
whole crystal goblet thing: you don't need a lot of pizzaz, you just
need to effectively convey a message in the simplest way possible.
