So this month’s Mad Graphic Novel Group is an especially
experimental... erm...experiment in the form of our first film
night!!!
Several ideas have been forward and most, if not all, of them will be
used in the future but to complement (weirdly) the book that was next
on our reading list, we have chosen the Crow.
James O Barr’s the Crow as a graphic novel is a tale of grief and
vengeance. A man called Eric who dies seeing his lover raped and left
for dead by a gang is reincarnated as the Crow, a symbol of vengeance
for the unfinished business of the deceased.
In between Eric’s acts of vengeance are the painful bittersweet
memories at times comforting but at other times painful.
The actual meeting will start with our usual with reactions to what
people thought of the book like we usually do followed by a viewing of
the film (
http://youtu.be/6UCqYrHFzdI) made in 1993 written David J.
Schow and John Shirley, and directed by Alex Proyas. This film is the
infamous final film of Brandon Lee with good reason for those who know
the reasons why.
The film will run for 102 minutes (1 hour 40 minutes) which will
hopefully leave us some time to discuss the film and the book as a
combination. We’ll start at 7 so we can enough time for the discussion
and film.
More than likely discussion will happen during the film viewing due to
time restrictions and there will be definite discussion during the
pizza break.
Like usual there is the two for Tuesday Domino’s pizza deal, so if you
want to take advantage of that, bring some money but also remember to
bring a recommended donation of £2 for the Madlab, the place where we
host our group.
Hope to see you there
