Hi,

Yesterday my 2012 imac died. I’m trying to decide what to buy. I’m thinking of getting a mac mini with M1 chip.

My questions are:
1. Could I run windows in bootcamp on it?
2. What sort of monitor I need to get? I don’t thinkk it comes with a monitor.

Many thanks

Andrew

A Mac with Apple silicon will not run Bootcamp. There are some other options, but there may be some accessibility issues with some of these options.
Apple does still sell a Mac mini with an Intel processor, and this Mac will run bootcamp.
A Mac mini does not require a monitor to function, however if you want a monitor, pretty much any monitor will work, but be advised that the mini has both a HDMI port, and Thunderbolt ports, so you will need an adapter for some monitors.
Another option to consider is the 24” iMac with apple silicon. My wife, who is sighted, has one of these, and it is a very nice option worth considering if you want a Mac with a very good monitor.

If you are considering a new Mac with Apple silicon, I would wait until after the yet to be announced October Apple event, where new Macs are expected to be announced.
If you are interested in the mini with the Intel processor, you might want to act soon, because it is unknown how long Apple will continue selling this option, and it could easily disappear once the October event is held, though I would assume some of these models could still be purchase from the Apple Refurbished store.

Thank you, Brad for this. I’d consider an intel based mac mini. I have no sight so a monitor is of little use to me but will mac mini run properly without it and more importantly will Windows be happy running in bootcamp without a monitor? Won’t there be issues of either the mac os or Windows demanding a monitor be present?

Regarding the silicon imac 24 inch, I assume it won’t run windows in bootcamp either?

As I said, a Mac with Apple Silicon will not run Boot Camp. That means any Mac with Apple Silicon will not run Boot Camp.

I do not use a Mac without a monitor, nor do I use a Mac with Boot Camp, running windows, therefore, I cannot answer your question.

Hi!
You can not use windows on it.
Unless VMware is working on the m1 chip.
Regarding monitor I don’t think you need a monitor if you have a mouse.

Hi there I happen to be totally blind from birth. With any computer that I get a hold of I always get a monitor of some kind in case something is going on with the computer somebody who can see would be able to help me find out what is going on and help me out. I also get a mouse with the computer as well.

Hi,

I have the intel mac mini from 2018 and it runs fine without a screen connected. Bootcamp also runso fine on it although I know longer have bootcamp setup, but either way it should work.

You don’t have to spend much on a monitor for your Mac mini. Just anything with an HDMI 2.0 or Thunderbolt will do. Guess which one is cheaper? I bought my monitor used for $50. I used it with a 2011 Mac mini and am now using it with a Mac mini M1 2020. No problem with either machine, though I almost never bother to turn the power on.

You can use windows on an M1 Mac mini. The only way I found to do this is to download a program called UTM. You then need to get an ISO image of Windows 11, the version of Windows that seems to run on ARM processors, and install that into UTM. The setup was a little bit tricky, but definitely doable.
I also use my Mac mini without a monitor. The only issue I had in setting it up was the requirement that I needed a mouse or a trackpad. If you don’t plan on using one long-term, you could always buy a trackpad, use it for set up, and take advantage of Apple‘s 14 day return policy to return the trackpad. However, if you ever need to boot into the recovery partition for any reason, you will need the trackpad, so it might just be best to keep the trackpad in case you ever need it again.
Hope that helps!
