Hey MACURH,
So, some may consider this e-mail extremely unethical of me since I am essentially utilizing NACURH related resources for my own political purposes, but I want to take this opportunity today to remind you all to take a few minutes out of your day and go vote. I do not really care for who, but if you are a citizen of the US, just go out and do it.
As an Arab-American citizen, born from two parents that immigrated to the United States and went through the citizenship process so that they can assimilate proudly into American society, I am sometimes shocked at how many American-born individuals take their right to participate in democracy for granted. Oftentimes, when we get so caught up in all of our other daily duties, activities, social gatherings, studies, and other life pursuits, we forget some of the privileges we are granted simply for being born in the United States. However, these are not easy times. We all have stake in what takes place in Washington and the only way we can keep others accountable and continue improving the status quo is by holding our representatives accountable by showing up to the polls on election day.
If you are on the fence about whether or not you want to vote, or "have too many things going on" so that you are :unable to go," I ask you to consider the following:
It was not until 1868, almost 100 years after our nations founding, via the 14th Amendment, that US male citizens were granted the right to choose those who govern them...
It was not until 1870 that the right to vote was extended to non-white males through the 15th Amendment...
It was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls on election day alongside men through the 19th Amendment...AND
It was not until 1971 that the voting age was reduced to the age of 18 years through the 26th Amendment.
Each of these changes were preceded by a large movement in which individuals risked their lives, and in some cases were killed just to ensure that you all can show up on a day like today and fill out a ballot. Don't take what they did for you for granted. Go vote! Exercise your right.
See you Friday!
Best,
Sammy
