Dear
Students,
Happy
new year, and I hope that this finds you all doing ok. This is a reminder
to you all about your dissertations/ thesis. Please be informed that we
recently received the appointment letters for the supervisors who had not been
appointed last year, and this means that you should take up the initiative to now
personally get in touch with your supervisors as I sent out the appointment
letters to all of them.
Also,
a memo was sent to your class emails sometime in October last year, on time
lines as the institute is trying its best to support you to graduate this
October 2013.
1.
You are all supposed and expected to notify the Director, IRGS (in writing) of
your intention to submit your thesis, atleast three months in advance. The institute/ipss
therefore, came up with deadlines of this, which should alteast be latest by
the 30th/Jan/2013, while
expecting that you will all be busy (prior to submitting the letter of intent),
working towards submission of your full thesis to IRGS by the 30th/April/2013. This is in
a bid for IRGS to be able to send the thesis to the internal and external
examiners as early as possible, as well as for ipss to organize your vica voce
thereafter in time.
2.
Be informed that the letter of intent to submit you dissertation should be written
to the director, IRGS and should be endorsed/ signed by your supervisor, so
make sure that you work with your supervisors accordingly. We shall also write
to your supervisors to inform them about deadlines and other requirements.
3.
Also be informed that you are supposed to pick a progress report from the
institute of research, which report must also be filled by you and your
supervisor and submitted to the institute of research so that they are informed
of your thesis progress.
4.
As you write your thesis, also take note that the number of words for a
complete dissertation/ thesis shall not
exceed 20,000 words with (spacing: double size; writing style: Times New Romans; Font size: 12) including the list of
references.
5.
This is also a reminder to those of you who have not finished with your taught
courses/ modules. Make sure to keep in constant touch with the institute and
consult with the admin’ assistant Ms. Devotah Silwany on 0782-697942 on when
the modules that you missed will be next offered, because without completion of
this, you won’t be eligible for graduation whatsoever. (I have noted this
because the times that I have called and talked to you about your thesis, some
of you have indicated that you still have modules to complete/ study).
Therefore,
you need to take up the responsibility of making sure that you keep yourself
informed by consulting with the institute rather just wait for communication
from the institute eachtime (sometimes when we call your phones, they are off)
so keep yourself informed by consulting with us or with your fellow colleagues
of any updates, before any worst consequences/ repercussions of incompletion
occur.
6.
When you are able to read this, kindly notify some of your colleagues who may
be out of reach of email service at the moment, but you may be able to talk to
later.
7.
I have also attached again the list of your supervisor allocation, as per the
appointment letters sent to them, as well as their contacts (that is; email and
phone numbers).
8.
In case your supervisors have had a second thought regarding your supervision
and are not willing anymore, please keep the institute informed. Otherwise, we
hope and shall assume that everything is going on well with you and your
supervisors. Therefore, do not wait until it’s too late, to lay a blame on the
institution when you have not played your part/ abided by the deadlines as well
as kept the institute of research (IRGS) and IPSS informed of your progress.
9.
Only open the document which applies to you as either (intake one-2009) or (intake
two- 2010).
Lastly,
I wish you all the best in 2013, and hope that we shall see you all/ most of
you graduate this October.
Kind
regards,
Esther
