I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but I installed 5.5 and when
I first launch it the program crashes immediately after the Config screens.
Could this be an XP SP2 issue? I reinstalled Windows a few weeks ago
(surprise, surprise), but I did not reinstall HS 5.5 until after I updated to
SP2. Never an issue under SP1.

I didn't locate any similar isses in the forum so I'm wondering if its my
issue. LOL

I got exactly the same problem: hs crashs after the config screen. And I also
got the Win XP SP2 installed. But I think it has to be an security issue,
because my admin can start it without problems - but me, as a user get this
lunch failure. We've already give me all right of the Marcomedia/HomeSite5
folder - without success. (even in the registry)

Maybe it's one of the security holes MS tried to fix ... well, would be nice
if Macromedia is going to release a patch for that problem. ;-)

I'm beginning to think it is related to SP2. I also loaded QuickBooks 2004 Pro
after my SP2 upgrade and ran into a similar issue. Turns out that the Registry
does not get wriiten to during the reboot. In QB's cases it was a SP2 issue.

I don't know about permissions being my problem. I am the Admin with all
rights and installed the damn thing under my login. Macromedia where are you??

Its got be an SP2 issue. I'm having the same problem. I wish MM would get its
act together and release patches on time or post an acknowledgement "We Will
Fix It" issue on the product home page.

The more I use these darned MM products the more I feel the company is headed
by a bunch of European smacktards.Get with the program Macromedia. SP2 was no
secret in being released!

Well, I've read some articles stating that MM is cutting support for HH. I
guess that us "low-end" users are of no importance to them. With this kind of
Micro$oft attitude I will take my business elsewhere. Other software
manufacturers have addressed the SP2 issue within a reasonable timeframe. I'm
certain that MM had been given SP2 by M$ an advance in order to test their
premium packages. Can't have the big users mad at you!!

I will take MM's no response to this problem as their final answer and look
elsewhere for a solution. There is plenty of stuff out there, even in the Open
Source community.

Thanks again MM for charging me a premium for a low-end product and failing to
support it! I won't be fooled again.

wheels rolling a bit better.

Have you all seen these MM technotes yet? Are they any help for your problems?

The first link is of no use to us.
The second really doesn't give us any beef on what needs to be changed with
our SP2 configurations.
What's interesting is that all my other apps have been fixed or issues
addressed by the software manufacturer.
MM is the first to say: "Look under your hood for a minute..."

As far as the Windows firewall goes, I don't use it.
I have ZoneAlarm on my system which I've been using pre-SP2. In fact, since
Win98 and W2k.
And it never prevented my FTP/RDS folders from opening up.
So I don't believe the firewall to be the cause of the issue: Homesite not
starting up at all after SP2 is installed.

Something else i tried, but didn't work...
Right clicking on the HS .exe to bring Properties > Compatibilty and setting
it to Win2k or even Win98/ME made no difference.

HS just won't start up under SP2.

Hi All,
Sorry some of you are having a problem launching HS 5.5 with XP SP2.

MM had allocated time and resources to test HS with this service pack but
unfortunately we didn't discover the problem you are running into before SP2
was released.

I'm trying to reproduce the problem but I'm not yet sure what the common
configurations are between the people that have this problem.

Let's try to narrow down the conditions under which this problem happens.
Here are a few of the variables:

- admin privilege
- HS 5.5 was installed and used prior to installing SP2
- using HS 5.5 or HS+ 5.5
- reinstalled HS 5.5 or HS+ 5.5 after SP2 installation

For each person that is running into this problem, please let me know how
your setup is regarding the above 4 conditions.

[for example, we know these answers for Intruder56: has admin privilege, HS
5.5 was not installed at the time of SP2 install, is using HS 5.5, installed
HS 5.5 fresh after SP2]

Thanks.

For those of you that are getting a crash right after the initial
configuration wizard runs, try changing the following registry setting
value. Changing the value will cause HS 5.5 to bypass the wizard and it
might get the product to launch.

Please note that IF this works, it is just a quick workaround to get you
past the crash as I don't have enough info on the problem and can't
reproduce it in house.

So, go to the registry and open
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macromedia\Homesite5

Change the -1 value for FirstRun to 0.

Start HS.

Here's the official policy. Please note that HS is not different from any
other MM product in requiring a fee for technical support and not requiring
a fee for installation issues.

"Macromedia still actively develops and supports HomeSite. Installation
support is offered free for all products, but technical support for all
products - including HomeSite - requires a fee. Free technical resources
for HomeSite can be found on the product support page

More info:

By the time the initial configuration wizard comes up, HS is fully loaded.
It appears that the crash occurs right after this wizard when HS tries to
write to the registry. If the security under SP2 is at a setting that
prevents writing to the registry, this could be the cause of HS's crash.
I've tested launch of HS 5.5 under medium security as Admin with the
firewall on and didn't have this issue.

There is one other possible workaround/solution. I'll wait to see how
things go after the users that have this problem make sure they have access
to write to registry.

I had this same problem when I installed Homesite5.5 about 2 months ago. The
error basically said "Homesite5.exe has generated errors and will be shut down

the DLL's. However I'm still looking for the article. This might help point you

I too am having problems, only I'm using v 5.2. I have HS installed on two
computer (notebook and desktop) and after installing SP 2 HS won't run on

While on the notebook HS crashes at the splash screen, the desktop crashes and
leaves the following error message after the MS message box disappears:

LRW,

I found a couple of bugs in our bugbase related to the error you reported
(EOLESYSERROR).

We are not sure exactly what causes it but the users who have this problem
were able to get HomeSite working by uninstalling and reinstalling it.

Be sure to backup your UserData folder. Uninstall HS, reinstall and reboot.

Hello,

I have tried everything that you described in this thread and nothing works.

Like someone before me said, I have run into problems where I can't even
remove homesite from my computer. Uninstaller does nothing.

I use AMD athlon 64
grpahic card: matrox parhelia 250 (using 3 monitors)
windows xp with sp2
tried homesite 5, homesite+, and homesite 5.5

I removed all startup aplications, disabled firewall, I have no antivirus or
spyware remover installed.
I unregistered and re-registered all homesite .dll's as instructed

When I had all 3rd party software startup turned off, firewall off, I went
into regedit and searched for "homesite". By hand I deleted at least 30 entries
untill nothing that matches was found anymore. I then tried to install a fresh
copy of homesite 5.5 and got this eror:
http://www.tvojproblem.com/ostalo/error.jpg

I have a laptop using same windows, where I didn't have to disable anything
and homesite works fine.

Please help.

I have tried all the suggestions from this thread, as well as the older threads
and technotes mentioned. After changing all the registry permissions, I still
am unable to launch homesite as a regular user (XP SP2). Power users can lauch
fine. Can anyone confirm that it IS possible for a regular user to use
homesite. I do not want to make my users power users.

I installed DreamweaverMX and HomeSite off the CD. Dreamweaver installed fine,
but HomeSite wouldn't execute: I was getting a runtime error 217. I traveled to
macromedia.com and found one dated doc on this error, but none of the solutions
(pre-XP) applied. Through trial and error, I discovered a crucial DLL
(wddx_com.dll) wasn't getting installed or registered. I tracked down a copy
and registered it. HomeSite now executed and would go through the initial
configuration screen, but then bombed with 'The exception unknown software
exception (0x0eedfade) occurred in the application at location 0x7c81eb33.' I
tried all (yes, before I'm asked to do a clean boot, all...) the suggestions
mentioned in this thread (BTW, there was no Registry key in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macromedia\Homesite5 called 'FirstRun' for
HomeSite+), with the net result that now all I get when I attempt to install
HomeSite is the 'Modify, update, or remove the program' dialog, whether I'm
attempting to uninstall (from that dialog, or from the Control Panel),
reinstall, or modify. I went through the Registry and blew away any key with
the term 'homesite' in it, deleted all 'homsite' directories and files, went
through the Installshield files and deleted any with the term 'homesite' in it,
ran Windows Install Clean Up, and still cannot now get HomeSite to even
install: it will install TopStyle Lite (which I don't need) and populate the
Registry, but won't copy files to the drive (no directories, nuthin'). I
tried every variation available in the 'Modify, update, or remove the program'
dialog without further success. All I get for my trials is a 'Maintenance
Complete' message and still no application. I have had serious issues with
Installshield in the past (with RoboHelp, incident #7940187), and reviewed my
notes to make sure I was OK, but could not determine anything amiss (I
uncovered the solution for that issue: a bad Installshield registry key). I am
running XP Pro with SP2, 2-gigs RAM, Athlon64 3500+, Matrox Parhelia 128,
full-admin rights, and have never had HomeSite installed on this machine. I
also have never had this type of issue installing software, whether Macromedia
or any of the other two dozen or so major applications I use. Somewhere, it
seems to me, Installshield is now reading (some obscure key in the Registry?)
that Homesite is installed and responding accordingly, if wrongly...any clues?
If someone can send me the installation script for HomeSite, I'd be thrilled to
go through it key-by-key...this is driving me nuts.... Thanks!

Over the past several days, Farah and I've been off-list attempting various
strategies to fix my issue with HomeSite+ failing to load (i.e., crashing after
the Configuration screen). We finally succeeded. There were actually several
issues going on with my system, some of which others in this thread have
experienced: crashing after the Configuration screen displays, crashing on load
when the value FirstRun is set to 1, inability to uninstall (and therefore
reinstall) HomeSite after the crash, and various exception messages.
Essentially, any of these events require a successful uninstall and reinstall
of HomeSite+: Exception message 'The exception unknown software exception
(0x0eedfade) occurred in the application at location 0x7c81eb33.' Exception
message 'Exception EOleSysError in module HomeStart+.exe at 0008DA99'
Configuration screen crash But what if you can't uninstall HomeSite+ properly
via the Add or Remove Programs Panel (Control Panel)? The solution in my
situation, and hopefully others running XP SP2, is to manually delete certain
folders and registry keys and then rebooting into Diagnostic Startup to install
HomeSite+ and again rebooting into Diagnostic Startup at the completion of the
installation. Here are the steps to take (this is the minimalist version --
you may need to take additional steps as suggested in the notes following):
Open the Registry and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and look
for the key containing the DisplayName value of Macromedia HomeSite+ (or,
search for that term). Note the key's name, then delete it and close the
Registry. From the Windows file explorer, locate the 'InstallShield
Installation Information' folder and locate the sub-folder with the same name
as the Registry key you deleted. Delete that sub-folder. Go to Start|Run...
Enter msconfig in the field and click OK to display the System Configuration
Utility dialog. Select Diagnostic Startup and click OK. Reboot. Install
HomeSite+. Reboot (staying in Diagnostic Startup). Run HomeSite+ and click
through Configuration and open and close HomeSite+. Return to the System
Configuration Utility dialog and change back to Normal Startup. Reboot. Run
HomeSite+ (hopefully, it will start right up). Notes: If you still get the
Configuration crash, you may need to repeat these steps with a more vicious
approach to the Registry: after saving a copy of the Registry, delete all
references to HomeSite+ (not a task for the faint of heart...). You may need
to delete the HomeSite+ folder under Program Files\Macromedia (or wherever you
installed HomeSite+ to, initially). There may be an additional file folder
under the 'InstallShield Installation Information' folder containing HomeSite+
installation information: do a text search for the term 'HomeSite' and delete
any sub-folder containing that term in a setup.ini file. Curiously, booting up
in Diagnostic Startup triggered, on my machine, the really irritating Windows
Activation screen, so I had to go through that really irritating process of
reactivating Windows again. That may be an anomaly, so just a heads-up. In
summary, deleting the registry key and the associated Installshield folder gets
you around the 'uninstall' failure; booting into Diagnostic Startup to install
HomeSite+ gets you around the XP SP2 issue. Many thanks to Farah for
persistence and patience in helping getting this resolved. I would be very
interested in knowing if this solution works for others. Regards...

Just wondering if this installation problem was ever solved? I am NOT running

It runs as administrator, but not as a user. I used the Dreamwevar upgrade CD,

Hi. I have just experienced this issue, installing HomeSite 5.5+ on a computer
running Windows 2000 Server SP-4, SQL Server 2000, ZoneAlarm Pro, Lavasoft
Ad-Aware 1.06 and McAfee VirusScan 9. The application just disappears after the
configuration screen, even if I set FirstRun to 0. I noticed in the registry
that SerialNumber was set to Evaluation even though i entered a valid Serial
Number, but manually updating this key didnt help. Also, the error i receive in
the event log is
"The application, , generated an application error The error occurred on

Hi Lucas,

Have you tried the following steps that one of the users on this thread has
posted? If you still have problems, please email me at fg...@macromedia.com.

Thanks,
Farah
QA Engineer
---------------------------

"1. Uninstall HomeSite and manually delete any HomeSite folders under
Macromedia that were not removed by the uninstall process using Windows
Explorer. (ie C:/Program Files/Macromedia/HomeSite 5) Only remove
HomeSite-related folders since you may have other apps like Flash installed to
the Macromedia location.

2. Make sure that you disable the lovely new Windows Firewall that comes with
the SP2 upgrade. START>CONTROL PANEL>WINDOWS FIREWALL. Select the Off radio
button.

3. Click on START>RUN and type msconfig <ENTER>.
This will bring up the System Configuration Utility window. Under the General
tab you will see Startup Selection. Typically, the Normal Startup radio button
is selected. Change this selection to Selective Startup and uncheck Load
Startup Items. This will eliminate any 3rd party software from loading in the
background. Windows will prompt you to reboot.

4. After the reboot there should be nothing running that can interfere with
the HS installation. Go ahead and load HS and try launching it.

5. Whether this solved the problem or not, remember to revisit Step 3 and
restore your previous settings to your startup. (Check Load Startup Items, then
Normal Startup, Apply the changes and reboot."

I am having this same problem as well. None of the fixes suggested here make
any difference. However, I have a unique perspective on the issue. First of
all, I have CF Studio 5 running fine on this very machine. I upgraded this to
HomeSite 5.5 and all was fine. My HDD died so now I am trying to reinstall and
getting this error.

The only thing different is that was I had a new HDD and CF Studio is not
installed. My company uses images for OS installs, so my machine is IDENTICAL
to my old PC minus CF Studio. Also, I am unable to launch in Diagnostic mode
without Network Login since I DO NOT have a local logon to this machine; only a
network one. Also, my Anit-virus is run via a logon script from the network and
can NOT be disabled. However, I do have full admin rights on the box (Antivirus
will not disable without and Admin password and I have been told it will NOT be
disabled by an admin and tampering with it will cost me my job).

I have had my HDD wiped twice and even wiggled a brand new machine out of the
deal. The process follows exactly the same on all machine boxes:

1. Install product. Installation runs fine.
2. The Installation process hangs at the very end when it asks to reboot. I
see an Install shield window in my taskbar, but cannot focus to it or kill it
manually.
3. When I shutdown manually, a process called "should not see me" has to be
end taksed.
4. After reboot, I get prompted for the license and go through the start up
config. Then I get the error.

I am currently not able to perform my job functions because I have no ide to
develop in. Also, I have had problems opening support tickets at Macromedia in
the past because these are corporate purchases and I do not have access to the
certain financial information that is always asked of me.

HELP!

Greetings,

Well, your problem sounds worse than mine.

But, I just got a new PC and as I am not administrator anymore, I again had
the same problem trying to run Homesite5.5+. The thing with the non permissions
in the OLE registry.

We made some changes in the registry, using this article:
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_17261

Yes, you have to change a key that mentions "allaire" - don't let that throw
you.

But, it worked for me, I can run Homesite now.

Good luck

Well, that wont help me. I am an Administrator on the box. However, the
Anti-Virus requires a password to disable. That is the only thing I cannot do.
I have also tried installing CFStudio 5 with the same results.

What upsets me is that I have installed Homesite 5.5 3 times successfully in
the EXACT SAME environment. Same OS build, Same Software, everything. However,
now off 3 builds I am having this same issue.

Please help. :(

As an Update, I called Macromedia for support which was a waste of an hour.
Said that there was nothing they could do. They gave me a long distance number
to inquire for further support. However, I am not able to dial long distance
from my office and I am SURE not paying long distance out of my own pocket. :(

When did Macromedia start sucking? I surely never had this kind of problem
getting support when it was Allaire.

Hello Umbrae,

Are you able to or have you tried to install in Safe mode? Please contact me directly at fg...@adobe.com if that doesn't work.

I am having the same problems....

I believe that it is a registry permissions problem (even after the program is
installed).
I have a workaround that may help lead to fixing the problem.

If I log onto the machine with a network account (even with administrator
priviledges) I get the error (It sometines takes a while, but I always get the
error ).

But if I log onto the machine as the administrator (using the machine
administrator account) I do not get the error. Ever.

I believe the group policy on the network is effecting write permissions to
the registry that Homesite is trying to write to....
(I am using Win XP, on a Win 2003 Network using SBS).

I run HyperOs on my computer, a system that allows simultaneous installations
of Windows in different partitions, and have used Homesite+ for a year with no
problems. I've just installed Homesite+ on a new HyperOs partition (on the same
computer) with the same problem that many others seem to be having - installs
upto the InstallShield failure and loads with the 217 runtime error. I can
install it on my laptop with no problems.
I have downloaded a trial version of Homesite 5.5 from Macromedia and this has
installed with no problems and runs fine. Of course, my serial number for
Studio MX 2004 won't work with it and Adobe want money in exchange for a new
serial number.
What's the difference between Homesite+5.5 and Homesite 5.5?

Hi lanark,

Here are the differences between HS and HS+: 1- Ability to connect to a CF
Server via RDS (Remote Developement Service)

2- Ability to open and use Databases on CF Servers (HS+ has a Database Tab in
the Resource Windows that HS doesn't)

3- Debugging CFML (coldfusion markup) pages on CF Servers (this particular
area has not been working since CFMX but still works for CF 5.
4- CFML Reference in Help Tab

Please email me directly at fg...@adobe.com and I'll help you get this working.

Thanks,

Farah

Hi, my name is Santiago, and I need help:
I'm using DreamWeaver as main Web design tool, and Homesite+ as HTML code
Validator.
The problem is when I try to start Homesite+ from DreamWeaver, if Homesite
isn't started first (from Start/Programs/Macromedia/Homesite+) appears an error
and it don't open Homesite. But if it was started before, Homesite loads the
page normaly.
I'm using an USER account, and I know that maybe my Administrator must change
some Registry keys. I wish to know what key must he change.
Thanks
Santiago Buczak

Hey,

Well, I wasn't using DW, so it was just a problem in that I'd get a Registry
error when I tried to run Homesite. If I logged in as Administrator I would not
get an error.

The error message mentioned an OLE Registry key error, and we were able to
track it down to some keys that mentioned "Allaire". I just did a Google search
on the error message (a popup box when it would bomb) and from there I could
find which Registry keys to have the administrator give me all permissions
for...

Make sense?

Howard:
My Administrator has changed the Allaire.* keys when Homesite was Installed, like the ASP4HS faq says. He change another Allaire keys but it was in vain.
Thanks anyway

Hi,

Anyone with HS/HS+ install issues can go to Installation Support by E-mail
link: http://www.macromedia.com/support/email/isupport/main.cgi

They should be able to help you with INSTALL issues only.

Thank you.

Hi, I hit the same problem about a month ago. As it seems this specific problem
only occurs when you install to a fresh machine, I never saw it when upgrading.
I think the basic problem is that the licensed 5.5 setup file we have "hopes"
that there is an existing Homesite installation and so "forgets" to register
and install a few dll's which are not part of the main install. You can track
down with RegMon or similar utilities which these are. There is no error
handling for these cases in Homesite, so the program crashes. One of these
dll's is xceedzip.dll, others starting with cf or so have already been
mentioned in other threads here. Same goes for some dll's which provide
validation etc. They all need to get registered/installed or you will get
errors with each tag validation which is *very* annoying. I think I mentioned
some more dll names in another thread, you may want to look there.

Hi all!
Thanks for the help, but I found the problem in the Registry!
I use Sysinternal?s Regmon to track the registry acces of Homesite and I found
this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{F7EE4E9B-CD64-11D1-8C81-0060973D093
D}
I give it Full Control Permissions and It all works fine!
Thanks a lot, anyway!
