Could someone please tell me how I can import a piece of artwork and then take
it apart to use only the portion that I want? For example, a jpeg with several
flowers, and I want to cut away and use only one of the flowers, OR a bitmap
with several pictures, and I only want to use one of them. I've tried
everything I can think of, but because the object comes imported as a unit, it
cannot be ungrouped so consequently I can't use the subselect tool. I thought
the crop tool would work, but I can't even get it to select a portion of the
image. I would appreciate any suggestions!

FreeHand is not a raster image editor. You can create a clipping path to
hide the unwanted portions of the image.

Draw a closed path around the flower. Cut the flower image (Cmd+X). Select
the path. Paste inside (Cmd+Shift+V). (These are Mac keyboard shortcuts.)

The 'Contents' checkboxes in the Transform panels control how contents of
clipping paths move or scale with the path.

Thanks so much for your help. I've spent hours trying to figure out how to do this!

The Freehand helps describes loading the crop tool into one's toolbox. I've
used it, but I've noticed that some (not all) of the TIF images return to their
original size and shape the next time I open the document. Under what
circumstances does the crop tool work? Should I avoid using it?

When using the "paste into" technique, how do I alter the path later? thanks.

I have to admit that I've never really used the crop tool. "Paste
Inside" works fine for cropping so I've always used that. Editing the
"cropping" path is fairly easy. Just click on the edge of the path (even
if it doesn't have a stroke) and you should be able to resize it, add or
delete points or reshape it.
