When trying to encode a simple mpeg file using Flash 8 Video Converter I get an
error message - as simple as that, no explanation, just a "Encoding is not
possible because an error occurred".

I've also tried importing the mpg onto Flash's stage and going through the
steps of the "Progressive download from a web server" - again, nothing
happened, just an error message.

Any ideas, help, advice?

Thanks, Raf.

meaning the file is not flash compatible.
Try to resample or another format.
Not all mpegs are compatible, they come with very large variety
of compressions for video and audio while flash has very particular
range, specified in help files.

Try downloading the trial for VideoRedo. Install it, load your file, then export it again. It should work fine in Video Encoder after that.

I usually encode MP4 files from downloaded SWF with this tool: http://www.kvisoft.com/swf-to-video-converter/. It works.
