is there a list of formats that convert well to Flash Video? I'm trying to
convert an avi file to Flash video. However, when the encoder is processing the
video, none of the data is being preserved (the preview window is completely
white). The avi file plays properly by itself. I'm not sure if its not a good
format to convert, or if the problem is with my encoder settings, or with the
settings when the avi file is created (its being created from a .vob file). I
don't have much of a video background (web designer) so any help is greatly
appreciated.

Regarding file formats, I just finished a week long class with an ACI and he
listed MOV, AVI, MPEG, WMV, DV, and ASF. Regarding your specific file, it may
be the file itself or the encoder settings. Try to convert it elsewhere, for
example on YouTube, to eliminate one or the other cause.

You should convert your Avi or Mpeg or WMV to MOV format. Mov formats only
accept Flash media encoder. It is easy way to convert FLV file from your other
video formats.
Use Flash Media Encoder it comes with Flash 8 and CS3.

Youtube and other site are not useful for you.

Flash Media Encoder does NOT come with Flash 8. Flash Video Encoder does.
Think of FVE as something you use to convert an already existing video and
think of FME as something you use to capture live (non-recorded) audio/video.
Your initial post refers to a video that has already been recorded, so if that
is the case FME brings no additional value to you. FVE can convert multiple
formats, you don't have to convert them to QuickTime movies.

I used a program called Free DVD Ripper to convert the file to MPEG2, MPEG4,
and AVI. The two mpeg versions appear blank FVE, although they play fine in
video applications. The AVI file worked but didn't preserve the audio. Any
suggestions on getting this to work in FVE?

You can try freeware like DVDVideo soft.
Also Kvisoft Video to Flash Converter is a nice choice for video to flash conversion.
