If you want the tool to erase, you must put your document in the image
edit mode (Modify > Image Object) where it will erase a bitmapped
image wherever you direct it.

Hope that helps!

I've tried this but it still won't erase the images I created in Fireworks
3. Are they bitmapped? Or is the problem that these images are a
combination of bitmap and vector graphics?

Thanks again!

The eraser tool doesn't work on vector graphics, only raster (bitmap)
ones. You can easily rasterize a vector object by using the sharpen
function from the xtras menu then use the eraser.

To remove a part of a vector image so that it remains editable, you can
cut it with the knife tool, punch another vector object through it,
block an area from view with another object... there are lots of
possibilities.

Andy:

that's because you are in Object editing mode. Click on the Erasor tool
and then click on the image where yo want to start erasing. The iamge
should get a heavy Blue and Black "Barbershop Pole" line around it as
opposed to the thin blue line. Now you can double-click the Erasor tool
and change the erasor size shape and edge in the Tool Options panel.
After doing this, drag your cursor around on the image and watch the
erasor do its work. Also you should see a red button with a white X on
it in the status bar. Clicking this button will get you back into
object mode where you will be editing vector objects.

Along with Linda's suggestions, if your objects are not images (hint:
Select the object and check the Object panel's title bar. If it's an
image, you'll see "Object (Image) " if it's a vector object you'll see
"Object (Path) " or something like that. If it's a vector object, then
I advise against converting it to an image (I use the Modify > Merge
Images command myself to convert a vector object to an image). Use other
paths drawn with the pencil tool, then choose Modify > Alter Path >
Expand Stroke to convert your stroke to a filled path of the desired
width and then Shift-select the object you want to "erase" and choose
the Modify > Combine > Punch command to punch the vector object with the
stroke object. I've also used the Freeform tool for some operations like
this. The possiblities are vast.
