Hi,

Very new to Fireworks (I am using FW8). I have two png files that I
would like to combine into one file. One "on top" of the other but
not in a layer sense. They are both the same width so it would be
something like

PNG 1
PNG 2

would make on PNG file.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

If I followed you right,

1.open your first PNG

2. Increase the Canvas size (Modify > Canvas > Canvas size and choose
the spare space you think you might need - bigger is better. Use the
arrows in the dialogue to increase in the direction you want.)

3. File > Import your second PNG - place the cursor roughly where you
want it but you can move it around and position it.

4. If you have spare canvas showing after positioning, then Modify >
Canvas > trim canvas

5. You can save it that way for future editing or Flatten the Image
(Modify > Flatten Layers.)

I used CS3 for the above but, as I remember it, there wasn't a lot of
change between these particular menu items between that and 8

Fantastic Duncan! Exactly what I wanted to do! I just need to figure
out how to crop out the miniscule white space around the new file and
paste it to a new file (I think).

Any way, thanks again!

Glad it worked.

You did the complicated bit.

Just use the crop tool (near the top of the tool bar on mine)

Draw round the pic and move each edge in until you crop out what you
want.

You might want to enlarge after drawing round to get precise movements
on the adjusters. Enlarge quite a bit if you like, using the Magnifying
glass and then go back to the crop tool and click outside the pic and
your marks should return and your moves will be much finer / clearer.

Then hit return

Best to work on a copy although the Undo is good on Fireworks (Contr+z
shortcut)

No need to cut and paste - just Save As with a different name (I use
xxxx01, xxx02 etc. until I'm happy.

If you only need to fill very small areas rather than crop the whole pic
you can use the stamp - come back.

Hey PW, there is another way. I hope you would find it easy.

Convert your PNG to JPG or JPEG.
Use this software.

http://www.imagemagick.org/script/install-source.php#windows

Download picasa

http://dl.google.com/picasa/picasa39-setup.exe

You can edit only JPG or JPEG in picasa. Edit your images in picasa if needed.

Now open a blank Word document and paste the images in order and save it as .xps file.

Now you can easily convert this xps to your PNG or JPEG or even GIF using this software.

Hope this helps :)
