I have an extension that would help you, the PHP Login Suite. Contains 34
server behaviors to build a complete login system using session variables or
cookies. The server behaviors can fit together in many different ways, so
you can build different types of system depending on the needs of your site.
The suite offers many different behaviors such as:

Login and Set Cookie or Session Variable
Allow access by cookie or session
Allow access by cookie or session with different access levels
Retrieve user details based on session or cookie
Check username is unique and insert
Allow user to change their password
Mail user a lost password

The suite can work with either plain text or encrypted passwords depending
on your needs. No hand coding is required for a standard site as the suite
generates all the necessary code for you automatically.

It costs just £19.99, which is approximately $35, and the full manual is
available as a free download in PDF format so you can see exactly what the
suite can do and how it works before you purchase.

Full details available at http://www.phploginsuite.co.uk/ .

For a list of all the extensions in the suite see
http://www.phploginsuite.co.uk/details.php

Hope this helps!
