Hello,

although I am quite experienced in Lingo and Director the following problem
drives me crazy:

I've got a terminal application that runs several hours per day
(unattended). I log errors to a textfile with setPref using the
alertHookScript. The following single error occurs is logged very often:

"Script runtime error, Out of memory. Unable to create the offscreen
buffer."

the freebytes however shows that there's plenty of RAM available.

A short description on the application itself: There's a stub/control
projector that opens and closes MIAWs again and again and again. In these
MIAWs we play MPEG2-files with the DirectMedia-Xtra.

Then I read the Technote No. 13848 from Macromedia. Following excerpts:

"Director movies playing AVI files will cause an increase in memory usage
over time. The greater number of times AVI files are loaded, the more memory
will be used over time.
[...] This is dues to a memory management issue on Windows 95/98 and NT and
MediaPlayer that causes a slow increase of memory use with each loading of
an AVI file [...] "Unload" commands within Director or quitting the Director
movie altogether will not free the memory used. The only way to free the
used memory is to restart the computer."

Is that our problem? This Technote is as old as Director 6 so I don't
exactly know if this means Media Player 1 (mplayer.exe/MCI).

What is the exact meaning of "Unable to create the offscreen buffer."?

If anyone could help me I'd be glad.

Christian

I cant really help you with your problem other than to say that I am having
the same one with 7.0.2. I am suprised that Macromedia tech support did not
alert me to the technote you mention.

If someone emails you a solution I BEG you to post it.
