Help,

I've been handed an archived CD ROM project that needs to be updated.
The project was created on an older versions of Director 7 possibly even

5 by a tech whose is now long gone and out of communication. Whenever I

try to open the *.dir file I get an Macromedia Player warning Message
stating "..../*.dir is protected and cannot be opened". Is there a way
to open this file in Director. I need the Lingo code out of it.
Recreating the code in the first place from what I understand was rather

intensive, so recreating the wheel needs to be avoided if possible. I
found an extracting tool for "exe" files but the extracted "dir" also
returns the same warning message. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated as my deadline is looming fast.

I, and probably others, sometimes protect movies which add a dxr extension
then change the extension to dir for various reasons. My reason is because
sometimes I include the dir extension in my code and don't feel like
changing the references to dxr. Unfortunately, a dir extension on a dxr
file will work but the movie will still be uneditable. This sounds like the
case for you. In that case you're out of luck..

Craig,

I was afraid of that. Excuse me while I go jump off the roof.

Have you tried with the dir opener xtra? You can rescue all the cast
members and the score but NOT THE SCRIPTS.

Agustín.

No, I haven't but what I need is the scripts.

Take a look here...http://www.j-roen.net/diropener/
this will work for DXR files (or DXR's that are renamed to DIR's), but not
for the projector itself..I think it will also open DCR's but I'm not sure.
Windows only though.. AND PLEASE DON'T USE THIS TO STEAL OTHER PEOPLES
CODE!!!

Don't worry, because nobody can steal code with diropener..

If Macromedia lets us protect our movies we expect them to be protected for
sure. If they could be re-opened by someone else, it'd be no use, right? So,
you have no way to retrieve the scripts.

But you can use the director.ini file at least to snif into the .dxr. On the
same folder as the executable file, paste the director.ini file, edit it and
uncomment the "message window = 1" line, so the message window will appear
among the projector. You can use it to retrieve certain variables and
stuff...

I was under the impression (though I have no idea exactly how to do this)
that all the data in protected movies, projectors or Shockwave is ripe for
plundering, with the exception of scripts, since they're compiled. It was my
understanding that anything else in the cast of the movie is vulnerable.

I think, something like a year ago someone posted a link to a
panic-I-protected-my-files-and-deleted-the-backup-please-help-tool which
would "unprotect" the .dxr or .cxt files. It would give back access to
bitmaps and text but not to stage infos or program code.

I'm not sure anymore (hey, it's a year ago... ...and my brain seems to decay
lately...) but if I'm not mistaken this "unprotect tool" was provided by MM
themselves. Maybe a thorough search on the MM website would reveal the tool.
Fair enough: You wouldn't need such a tool unless you want to plunder the
code of someone else or unless you are stupid enough not to let Director
backup your files before protecting. But I guess MM had to do something for
all those people of the latter group getting on the nerves of the
MM-Helpdesk...

Greetings
René

I believe the link was from MediaMacros rather than Macromedia.

It's pretty simple to create your own movie that can extract the members and
even re-create the score (think MIAW, new(), scoreSelection(),
beginRecording(), etc). As you said, it will not recover the Lingo.

A tool wich recoveres your bitmaps & txt is DirOpener. I think there
is a link on Director Web to it. Of course it can't recover scripts.
