Hi, my organisation is thinking of migrating to v8 from v6. We have a number
of v6 applications that share a v6 server and want to convert the main one to
v8. If we upgrade the server to run v8, will v6 apps be able to run in this
new environment? or will we need to run a v6 and a v8 server? or convert all
apps to v8?

In essence yes. 90% of the apps should run just fine, maybe 10% at
most may need some minor tweaks. One thing I would suggest first is to
run the Code Analyzer in the CFAdmin on your apps to see if there are
any potential problems.

CFMX 8 is not backwards compatible with CFMX 6, so there is no way to know if
this will work. I know that a number of tags and parameters were deprecated
between v6 and v7, so that's where the problem will lie. There were no
deprecated tages/parameters between v7 and v8, so in theory that migration
would be fine, but since you're jumping two versions the only way to be sure is
to test it on a dev machine.

funny I just moved a CFMX 6.1 app up to CF8 without any problems. What
tags and params are you referring to?

CF8 also has a Code Analyzer feature available under Debugging and Logging within the CF Administrator. Take a look at it. I also went from version 6.1 to version 8, and used this utility.
