I have packaged a file in Authorware 5 Attain, then when I tried to open it,
it displayed the following error message: "unable to display icon "content
background" because the following error has occurred. Xtra not found. Other
objects may also fail to appear. Records of this session will not be saved."
how can I deal with this problem?

Here's an interesting thought..... Why can't they make it so when you
create your package , it includes any XTRAS you used? Sure would make
things easier, also alleviate a lot of problems and questions.

I thought someone had created a KO to do this?

If this is the case, please tell more. I still can't figure out what to
copy into the xtra folder and what not to copy. Right now, I am making a
copy of all the .x32 files I have because I cannot figure a way to know
which ones I need. Even after reading the tech note. That's over 6 Megs
of files when all I probably need is four or five files.

Yes, this is one process that A'ware should automatically do. Create an
xtra folder in the same directory of the packaged file and include the files
that must be in it. Is there any hope that a future version will do this?

Check the Authorware Ring. I think Joe Ganci may have a KO; if not him,
then someone else on the Ring. I use www.mediashoppe.com as an entry
point to the ring since its the URL I find easiest to remember.

As a hint of what to use and what not to use...look closely at the names
of the Xtras. You should be able to figure out the format the Xtra
supports from its name. Have you used BMP format? You need bmpview.x32.
Have you used Targa or Png or PICTs? If not, delete targaimp.x32,
pngimp.x32 and pictview.x32. I think you get the idea.

Have you used any functions from the FileIO Xtra? If not, you don't need
it. Hav you used any external transitions? If not, you can remove all
the transition Xtras (Dirtrans, Coverin, Coverout, thebyte, Crossin). If
you HAVE used an external transition, the transition dialogue lists the
Xtra that it's going to to find the transition.

You should be able to eliminate many of the Xtras through this process.
If you want to narrow things down further, remove Xtras you're not sure
about keeping only those you KNOW you need. Run the program; do you get
any Xtra errors? Where do they occur. That will give you hint as to what
type of Xtras you still need.

O.K.... by trial and error I was able to figure out which 8 .x32 files and 1
.ucd that I needed to keep. By deleting the obvious ones and then deleting
others one at a time as you suggested. There were several I would not have
suspected would be needed. What a hassle.

I'm sure you remember when you first discovered this. Now, I'm sure this
is all second nature and you don't even think about it. I know one thing,
these 9 files are going into a folder all there own and will be copied into
any future projects no matter what. :-)

I will start cruising the ring to search for the KO. If anyone else finds
it before me, please post the location.

Thanks again Grace. As always, your information is very illuminating.

Yes...I do remember what a shock it was when I discovered that I needed
to include Xtras in A4. I also remember that I got over it and I learned
a lot about how Authorware works in the process.

The web site is quite clear about the 3 that are always needed. Those
are the ones whose names I can never remember.

I create an Xtras folder for each project which I keep in a directory in
which I place my packaged files. The first time is the hardest but it
shouldn't be a real pain after you've done it once.

Can Macromedia make it easier for us? Perhaps they can by providing an
updated list of the Xtras (since they introduced some new ones in A5 and
the current tech note was developed for A4).

I don't think an automated process is the solution. It would make it
easier for new users BUT it would mean that some people would just never
learn what files their programs need and they'll be in a panic the first
time something goes wrong. IOW, an automated process would just shift
the questions from "why isn't this automatic" to "why did the reporting
tool miss this Xtra".

You are correct....you can find the KO at:

http://www.mrmultimedia.com/

in the download section. The KO is called 'Xtras Knowledge Object'
and I have used with pretty good success.
