The Retailing and Consumer Sciences (RCSC) Division of the John and
Doris Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences at The University
of Arizona invites applications for Associate or Full Professor in the
division’s new Consumers, Environment and Sustainability Initiative
(CESI). This position is part of a new university-wide hiring
initiative in environmental science and policy. The CESI facilitates
innovative research, teaching and outreach activities focused on (1)
consumer rituals, attitudes and behavior associated with the
consumption of water, energy and food, and 2) consumers’ sense of
social responsibility as it relates to the sustainability of these
resources. With the appointment is the opportunity to be named the
PetSmart Distinguished Professor (a 5-year appointment, renewable).
Must have demonstrated ability to attract external research funding
and to interact effectively with corporate partners in developing
research projects.

PETSMART DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR OF RETAILING AND CONSUMER SCIENCES

John and Doris Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences
The University of Arizona

Starting Date: Fall 2010

Position Description: Associate or Full Professor (9-months, tenured)
with an opportunity to be named as PetSmart Distinguished Professor (a
5-year appointment, renewable). This position is a key component of
the Retailing and Consumer Sciences division’s new Consumers,
Environment and Sustainability Initiative (CESI), which is part of The
University of Arizona’s campus-wide commitment to and focus on
scholarly activity and scientific research about the environment and
its sustainability. The goal of the CESI is to facilitate
collaborative, innovative and interdisciplinary efforts to support
research, teaching and outreach activities that focus on 1) consumer
rituals, attitudes and behavior associated with the consumption of
water, energy and food and 2) consumers’ sense of social
responsibility as it relates to the sustainability of these resources.
Our long-term vision is to transform the CESI into a CES Institute.
This position is part of a new university-wide hiring initiative in
environmental science and policy

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. required in consumer behavior,
marketing, retailing, economics, management, psychology, sociology or
closely related field; a distinguished record of research publications
and evidence of effective teaching to both graduate and undergraduate
students; and successful supervision of graduate student research.

Preferred Qualifications: Internationally recognized scholar with a
strong and continuing record of excellence in research involving
consumers. We are especially interested in candidates with research
interests and projects that are relevant to CESI. Superior
communication and interpersonal skills necessary to be an effective
leader, instructor, and mentor in an interdisciplinary team
environment. Demonstrated ability to attract external research
funding, and to interact effectively with corporate partners to
develop new research projects and communicate research results.

Responsibilities:
• Provide strong university-wide leadership for the CESI by leveraging
the research interests of the RCSC faculty in collaboration with UA
faculty from the Institute of the Environment, the Eller School of
Management, and others, to provide a consumer perspective on the
environment and its sustainability.
• Participate in the efforts of the new University-wide Institute of
Environment in enhancing UA efforts to advance scientific
understanding, develop sustainable solutions, and assist policy
makers, business, and the public in making wise decisions about the
environment.
• Seek extramural funding from private and public sources to
facilitate research projects conducted in collaboration with RCSC
faculty and students.
• Conduct research that leads to publications in leading scholarly,
refereed journals.
• Work closely with corporate and industry partners to develop and
lead stakeholder-relevant research projects.
• Effectively teach undergraduate and graduate RCSC courses.
• Advise and mentor RCSC graduate students, as well as direct their
research.
• Actively contribute to department, college and university service
committees and participate in professional development and outreach
activities.

RCSC Program Description: The mission of the RCSC Division is to
deliver integrated research, educational and outreach programs of
excellence, focusing on effective and ethical business practices for
the delivery of goods and services. The RCSC program offers
undergraduate (B.S.) and graduate (Ph.D. and M.S.) degrees through the
Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences in the College of
Agriculture and Life Sciences. RCSC faculty maintains outstanding
research programs, largely funded by external, competitive grants from
private and federal sources. The Terry J. Lundgren Center for
Retailing (TJLC) in the RCSC Division is internationally recognized
for providing students with extensive exposure to retail industry
career opportunities through its educational enrichment programs,
financial resources for faculty development, and graduate student
support. The TJLC, working with industry partners, sponsors the annual
Global Retailing Conference, which attracts national and international
speakers and participants. Also within the RCSC Division is the Take
Charge America Institute for Consumer Financial Education and Research
(TCAI). The TCAI supports faculty and graduate student research
related to consumer financial decisions and retail financial services.
It also maintains outreach programs aimed at improving personal
financial skills. Opportunities for research and industry professional
development, as well as faculty research fellowships, are available
