Federal Government Shuts Down, Homeless Assistance Safe for Now
As a result of Congress' inability to reach a budget agreement, the federal government partially shut down last night at midnight with the end of the fiscal year.
This past week, each chamber of Congress proposed Continuing Resolutions (CRs) that would have temporarily extended FY 2013 spending levels to fund the federal government until
fiscal year (FY) 2014 appropriations levels are finalized. However, the House majority insisted on tying delayed implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to any CR, while the Senate majority refused to agree to a delay of ACA implementation. It was
this impasse that led to the partial shutdown.
The shutdown will not have a drastic immediate impact on
homeless assistance programs, since they are currently spending FY 2012 and FY 2013 funds and are considered essential programs. Funding to run the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program will also be secure unless the shutdown lasts past December. The
funding for Public Housing is less certain and will vary by location.
It is critical that Congress reach a budget agreement that would ensure future funding for homeless assistance and affordable housing programs.

The Alliance is seeking applicants for a meeting and events internship. The intern will work closely with the Alliance's Director of Meetings and Events on all
of the planning components of the Alliance's annual Conference on Ending Family and Youth Homelessness. The position calls for 15 to 20 hours a week, and will run from early November to early March.
Applicants are expected to have an interest in meeting and event planning, as well as relevant experience, excellent writing and communication skills, excellent organizational skills,
